Dear Senator or Congressman:
I ask for your support in fully funding the U.S. Department of Energy PORTS D&D Project
in Piketon, Ohio in the FY2016 Budget.
Despite pleas from local officials, community business leaders and the Ohio Congressional
delegation, the DOE continues to submit funding requests for our project that will cause a
major disruption to the progress that is being made to clean-up the site. The yearly threats of
budget cuts keeps our community in a constant state of unrest. Families are faced with the
daily worry of putting food on the table and planning for our childrens livelihood. Should a
layoff occur nearly 500 workers with decades of experience will lose their jobs. The loss of
employment in Southern Ohio will delay the cleanup and cripple the economy.
The D&D Project is more than cleaning up a shutdown gaseous diffusion plant its about
the federal government keeping their promise to a community that has supported the nuclear
industry for over 60 years. Its about remediating the land so the community can focus on
reindustrialization. Cutting the sites workforce, ending reindustrialization and recycling
efforts, and ignoring environmental contamination is unacceptable to our community.
Please do not let the DOE shortchange this project and our families. I urge support by fully
funding the PORTS D&D Project now and until completion.
