Natural Selection at Play

Introduction
In this experiment you will test the theory of natural selection using a computer
simulation about bunnies to determine the effects of various mutations on the survival
of a species.
PART 1
1. Access the computer simulation via
https://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/natural-selection. Click Run on the
pop-up window.
2. Click Add Friend. Allow the population to grow for a few generations before
choosing the Wolves selection factor.
Questions
1. What happened to the bunny population when the wolves were added?

PART 2
3. Reset the simulation. Choose the Brown Fur mutation and then click Add
Friend. Allow the population to grow for a few generations before choosing the
Wolves selection factor.
Questions
1. What happened?

2. How did the mutation affect the bunny population? Which colour bunny was
most successful at reproduction? Why were they the most successful?

3. How quickly did the bunnies all become brown? What does this tell you about
how long it takes for evolution to occur?

4. What would have happened if you had chosen the Long Teeth mutation
instead of Brown Fur? (Hint: why did the brown bunnies survive earlier?)

PART 3
5. Reset the simulation. Choose the Brown Fur mutation and the Arctic
environment, and then click Add Friend. Allow the population to grow for a few
generations before choosing the Wolves selection factor.
Questions
1. What happened?

2. How did the change of environment affect the bunny population? Which colour
bunny was most successful at reproduction? Why were they the most
successful?

...
.
3. Would the same thing have happened if you had chosen the Food selection
factor instead of the Wolves? Why/why not? (Hint: why did certain bunnies
survive wolf attacks? Would the same thing work for obtaining food?)

4. What do these simulations tell you about how natural selection works? (Hint:
how did brown fur colour help the bunnies in the Equator? Did the same thing
happen in the Arctic?)
