    thatplentyoftheoriesaboutourmostfamousbardandhisworkhavearisen.Itwas,afterall,
    MarkTwainwhosaid:Sofarasanybodyactuallyknowsandcanprove,Shakespeareof
    StratfordonAvonneverwroteaplayinhislife.
    NotalwaysaseasilydismissedasShakespearechampionswouldhaveyoubelieve,herearethe
    mostwidelyknowntheoriesabouttheauthorshipoftheplays.

    In1848theAmericanJosephCHartwroteabookputtingforwardtheargumentthattheplays
    werewrittenbyseveraldifferentauthors.In1856DeliaBacon,anotherAmerican,wrotean
    articletosupportthistheoryandattributedtheauthorshiptoagroupofpeoplewhowere
    overseenbySirFrancisBaconandSirWalterRaleigh.

    courtierpoet.Thereislittleevidencethatsuggestshedidwritethem,butsomebelievethereare
    referencesintheplaystodeVere'slifeandthatthereareaseriesofcodesinthewritingthat
    implicatetheEarlastheauthor.ThisisthetheoryputforwardinthefilmAnonymous.

    ItisalsothoughtpossiblethatSirFrancisBacon,writerofNewAtlantis,essayistandscientist,
    couldhavepennedtheplays.Againthereislittleevidencetosuggestthis,apartfromsimilarities
    intheplaystohisown.ThetheorythatBaconcouldhavewrittentheplayswasfirstputforward
    in1856.
    ChristopherMarlowe
    TheplaywrightChristopherMarlowewaswritingatthesametimeasShakespeareandit'slikely
    thatthetwocrossedpaths.ThetheorygoesthatthereportsofMarlowe'sdeathinadrunken
    brawlonMay301593werefalsifiedtoprotecthimfromgoingtoprisonforbeinganatheist.
    MarloviansbelievethatShakespearewasnamedastheplay'sauthortoprotectthetruthofwhat
    reallyhappenedtoMarlowe.
    WilliamStanley
    WiththeinitialsWS,WilliamStanleyisanotherstrongcontenderforauthorshipoftheplays.He
    wasthe6thEarlofDerbyandhadhisowntheatrecompanycalledDerby'smen.Hewasknown
    tosignhimselfoffasWill.HetravelledinEurope,andthroughhismarriagetoElizabethde
    Vere,hewasrelatedtoWilliamCecil,onwhommanybelievethecharacterofPoloniusin
    Hamletisbased.
    RogerManners
    ThetheorythattheplayswerewrittenbyRogerMannersthe5thEarlofRutlandwassupported
    byaGermanliterarycriticcalledKarlBleibtreuin1907.Mannersmarriedthedaughterofthe
    poetPhilipSydneyanditisthoughtthatthetwoofthemtogetherwrotetheplays.However,the
    Earlwouldhavebeenonly16whenthefirstofShakespeare'sworkswaspublishedin1593.
