McGowen Elementary

What Are We Learning?


Language Arts:
This week we will read books that teach about the importance of following the rules. The
kids will work on writing a response to the books in their reading journal. They may write a
connection they made, describe a characters traits, or write about a lesson they learned.
During word work we will introduce Spalding spelling. This is a program that helps the
children be able to decode words. Decoding words helps the children be better readers and
writers. They will learn all about the different sounds that letters and letter combinations
make and how to use those letter combinations to spell unfamiliar words.
In writing we will begin using the writers process to write a personal narrative. We will
practice planning, drafting, revising and editing a story.
Math: We will learn about place value. The kids need to be able to represent numbers in
standard form, word form, expanded form, and picture form.
Science: We will talk about safety this week. We will learn about safety rules for the
playground, school, and home.

Homework:
This week for homework please
have your child read 20 minutes
every night. Please initial the
Reading Log each night.
Please practice your phone
number and address with your
child. He/She should be able to
recite and write each.
Beginning next week, you will
receive homework for the week
on Monday. It will be due the
following Monday.
Spelling will begin next week.
