Berlin

is situated in the North-East of Germany, and is crossed by two rivers: Spree and
Havel. Beside the fact it is the Germanys largest city (with an estimated population of 3.5 million
people), it is also its capital. Berlin was first documented back in the 13th century, and then in
the 15th century it became the capital of the Margraviate of Brandenburg (Principality of
Brandenburg), and since then it was continuously a capital; of the Prussian Kingdom, German
Empire, Weimar Republic, and the Third Reich.

Berlin is a very beautiful city, with many parks and gardens, historical buildings, and modern
economical centers, too. If one day youll visit Berlin, you shouldnt miss some of its iconic
places:

The Brandenburg Gate, an 18th neoclassical triumph arch

The Berlin Wall was a barrier that divided Berlin in two parts (between 1961 and 1989): West
Berlin from the Eastern Berlin, the capital of German Democratic Republic.

Charlottenburg Palace is the largest palace of Berlin; it was built in baroque and rococo styles,
starting at the end of the 17th century, and extended during the 18th century, and is surrounded
by beautiful gardens.

Alexanderplatz, originally a cattle market outside of the old city fortification, is now a large
pedestrian zone in the central Mitte district of Berlin (the historical center), near the TV Tower
(Fernsehturn), the second tallest structure in Europe.
