You need

newspaper
metre rulers

tape
wooden blocks (all one size)

Activity
When you buy firewood from a firewood yard, it is measured by the cubic metre.
Make a cubic metre frame by using rolled-up newspaper and tape, like Jeannie and
Rupert are making here:

Use some wooden blocks to help you answer the following questions.
1.

How many wooden blocks would you get if you ordered 1 cubic metre
of them?

2.

If the blocks were stacked up as a wall that is one block thick, how tall
and wide would that wall be?

3.

How many cubic metres would fill your classroom?

4.

Look at a large tree. Estimate how many cubic metres of wood are
in the tree trunk.
