Management for

Hypoparathyroidis

MEDICAL MANAGEMENT

Increase serum calcium


level

Increase calcium level to 9-10 mg/dL

Eliminate the symptoms of Hypoparathyroidism


and hypocalcemia

Administration of Calcitrol, calcium, magnesium


and Vitamin D

A thiazide diuretic may be administered to help


decrease urinary calcium urinary excretion

If osteoporosis occurs, recombinant parathyroid


hormone may be administered

Chronic
Hypoparathyroidism

Diet high in calcium and low in phosphorus

Oral tablets of calcium salts such as calcium


gluconate for diet supplementation

Aluminum hydroxide gel or aluminum carbonate


combined with meals to bind phosphate and
promote excretion through GI tract

NURSING MANAGEMENT

Early detection of hypocalcemia, tetany,


seizures and respiratory difficulties for patients
who
undergone
thyroidectomy
and
parathyroidectomy

Calcium
gluconate
administration

Continuous cardiac monitoring for patients with


cardiac disorders

Patient education about medications and diet

IV

for

emergency
