Inquiry and Analysis

Design Problem:
When people are at work, school, and doctors dentists or anywhere else they can get cards with contact information,
name and company name. Although these cards are important, a lot of people tend to lose them because they cant find
an appropriate place for them, there is also the problem of losing legal cards such as, car license, Id cards and many
other types of cards, yes there are places for them in a wallet but sometimes people probably dont want to take them
all with them.
Design Brief:
I think I will make a box for all of these cards, using a divider for important cards that need legal documents, and the
other part for cards that you collect for people, my storage idea will be dedicated to adults from the range of about 21
and above, I will be giving this box as a gift for one of my family members, and I hope to have good feedback.

Research Strategy:

Research

Source/ Sources

Why?

When?

Other designs

I am going to be using the internet, the

classroom and shops around Dubai as my
sources, for the internet I am going to be
using the photographs and siting where
and for the internet images I am going to
be using the MLA format to site all of the
web sources.
I am going to use the piece of timber wood
in class.

I need to see some examples because these will give me

examples of what to do and what not to do, maybe I will like a
design but I can improve it and change it so that its better, or
see a design that is not so good and know what to avoid
doing, this will also help give me ideas as to what I will be
doing, (shapes, color and size) this will also give me a vague
idea to what my target audience likes.
This is going to give more of a specific outline of what I need
to do and because I have only a specific amount of material I
need to know.

22/9/2013

Target market
questionnaires

I am going to use a website called survey

monkey (www.surveymonkey.com) to
make my questionnaire, I am going to be
using my mostly my family but I will also be
using family friends.
I am going to use an online survey creating
survey and ask a lot of people from my
target audience (Business people), and I am
also going to do it normally by going
around asking people, for example
teachers, family and friends.

24/9/2013

Joints

I am going to be using mostly joints from

my last years work but I will also be using
the internet to get a more of a variety.

This is going to help me determine the things to add or

remove in my design, this is also going to affect the simplicity
of the design, the colors, the patterns, the shape and
everything else to do with my design. This is also going to
affect the material I am going to use, if it will be wood or
plastic.
I need to do a questionnaire because I am not a business
women so I dont know what exactly they would prefer to
have also by having a variety of people answer the
questionnaire to have a good idea of what to make my
designs out of, the colors, the simplicity, the design, the size
and etc.
I will be introduced to a more variation of joints which will
most probably impact my design; this will also give me the
chance to try them at school with the machines.

Materials

I will use the class room at break times and

class times to take pictures and explain
what they are used for, how I will be using
it.

To see and discover what materials I could use to see if they

fit my design if they dont then I will know what resources I
will be limited to and change my design to fit them.

17/9/2013

Tools

I will use the class room at break times and

class times to take pictures and explain
what they are used for, how I will be using
it.

To know a little about how to use them, how they look, their
names, their primary uses, their other uses and alternate my
design idea to see how I can use the tools.

17/9/2013

Machines

I will use the class room at break times and

class times to take pictures and explain
what they are used for, how I will be using
it.

I need to know what machine I will need to use and how to

use them and when to use them, their precautions, and
weather I need them or not, I will also need to alter my design
to use as much as I can, to get the best possible grade

17/9/2013

Hinges

I will use the class room at break times and

class times to take pictures and explain
what they are used for, how I will be using
it.

I need to know my limitations, what I can do and I also need

to know what types of hinges there are to adapt my design to
fit my target audience

24/9/2013

Anthropometrics

I will use the internet; if I look in reliable

sources I will be able to find what I need.

I will need to make a design that is not too big for the
audiences hand and not too small; I will do this by looking at
the average middle part of the hands dimensions, so that it

can be held properly without problems.

Other designs:
Internet:
This design, in my opinion is a very good design for people who only store important legal cards such as ID
cards, License and etc. However as a general use it is not very good because it is too narrow which means
not a lot of cards can be stored, but the way the hinge is placed and the shape of the lid makes it look neat
and organized on the desk, it could be however be jammed and hard to open, It is also a very simple design
which is most probably what business women and men like. The ideas that I would like to take from this
design is the lid of the box.

This design, in my opinion is a he best design I found so far because of many reasons, it is very practical
because it has a divider and two holes for the fingers; for lifting up the last cards in the box without
getting annoyed or frustrated. The lid looks simple and nice, and I also liked about this design the fact
that you can see the top and bottom of the box which gives you the freedom to see most of the cards,
however if someone left the card at the bottom for a long time the card would collect dust and people
would probably not want to use it because it doesnt look too good now.
This is in my opinion is the second best in my opinion because it helps keep the cards clean for later
use, it also keeps them in a nice pile, because if it was to big the cards would slip and it would be
annoying to get out so that might be something to avoid in my design, another bad quality in this
product is the fact that you have to pull it out, this might be a struggle because you will have to
push it down to have the drawer out of the case, I think an improvement for this would be to put a
small handle on both sides or remove the drawer part of it.

From school:
This was a storage box that I found in my classroom, I think this is a good design and good
material, however if you try to open one the other one will open as well, which makes it a
challenge to many people, it also has one transparent drawer and the other is white, that in my
opinion doesnt look very professional. The overall look of the product depending on the target
audience is good with some faults, on way in which the artisan can improve this design is buy
having the sheet of acrylic between the two thicker so that the audience will not have a struggle
opening and closing it.

STORAGE UNIT

Mr. Brazil

This was a storage box for makeup, in my opinion this is a pretty good design however it can be
improved by having smaller sections in each of them because that way they can be stored separately
without any struggles, the good things added on this design is the screw which allows you to slide it
instead of having it as a hinge, this will be easier to keep open but it will take up double the space you
need for the actual box, so it isnt that great for storage.

For this example I didnt have the product itself with me however I did have the picture, this picture
shows me that this jewelry box was designed in a great way because it has divisions for the different
jewelries and sections, the design on top is very simple and royal, the color red is also royal, this shows
that the artisan can produce a connection between the jewelry and the colors, because jewelry is
usually represented in royalty, on the picture I can also see the hinges on the back and I think it is good
that the artisan had two hinges because the lid would be quite heavy and two hinges will help stay
steady, keeping it from falling or having less of a guarantee.

From home:
This is the only card holders box that I found at home so I
took a picture of it, this is a very simple design it is relatively
easy to open, you can use your finger in the hole for lifting
up the last cards, it also has a small curve on the bottom to
lift the lid off if it doesnt come out by pulling, or if there are
a lot of cards inside

Measurements

This image is the maximum of the material size limit, this

means that I cannot have more than this material, the
exceptions are the dowel stick and the hinge, I also have to
know what measurements I will be able to choose, his will
help me determine whether I will be able to know how
much of this material I will be needing to use, this will also
help me define how much of acrylic I will be able to use, as a
material for design.

This is a picture of two pieces of paper one in which has the exact
measurements of a card and the other has the exact measurement of two
cards with a 0.5 thick acrylic divider, the first one is for my first box design,
that will be a vertical box, it will also be 4 cm thick, I will need this because
I will need to determine if I will have enough material, the second one is
for my horizontal box, which will be 6cm high.

Target market questionnaires

The questionnaire
1. Are you a male or a female?
Male

1- Are you a male or a

female?
Male
Female

In my opinion this is a very important question, this determines whether

the women or men are more in business, to alter my design, this will also
affect the size of the band that I am going to attach to my product; the
mens hands are larger than the womens. This also helps me alter my
design/ color and shapes.

2- Approximately how

3- If you would use a box to store your cards,

Bright

This question helps me determine how

thick the vertical box should be, on the pie
chart I can tell very quickly that the
maximum number of cards that are carried
are 10 so that means that I am going to
have space that fits ten cards, however
there are also people with only one card,
so what I am going to do is design
something that fits 10 cards but If you only
put 1-3 it will not be too big.

Pretty
Light
Black

This is the only question which I have asked without giving any options
or choices I just asked the question and waited for the different ideas
from different people, there were too many ideas since I got responses
from about 30 people but the most common one was that it should be
small, and I dont think that will be much of a challenge because the size
of an average card is small. All of the others are mostly colors and
shades, but there are other properties that the business women and
men would like to have is that they would be Practical, different, pretty
and vertical.

4- What material would

you prefer?
Acrylic

Clear

Two

This question is the second most

important question because the basic
idea of the design is here, and I would
need to know what the design would be
made out of, in this case my target
Audiences most common choice is
wood, which I think is the best choice
because there is a lot you can do with it.

Mr. Brazil

6- Would you take or

leave this box?
Leave
Take in
pocket
Take in
breif-case
Take in
handbag

This is the most important

question, because I need to know
whether or not I am going to do
the divider between the two sides
of the box for daily used cards and
cards that are not use don a daily
basis, the final answer is one, the
majority of my target audience is
one so that means that, my design
is also going to change and
become one.

I needed to know whether or not

people take the boxes with them
or do they just keep them as
storage at home, because I would
different point of views, and in
general I will try to satisfy the
needs of all of my target audience
which means that I may need to
make 2-3.

7- Which of the following

examples of a design would you
prefer?
A lot of bright

One design

Artistic designs
Calssic wood
Practical

This question is similar to the third question, except the third

question has more freedom while this one is more multiple
choice, I wanted to know what to base my design on as a basic
scale rather than the third question which is a more detailed
answer, because it has to do with personality than what are the
basic ideas. And I can see that for the question number four
and this questions my target audiences majority stays at wood.

Materials:
Plastic

Wood
I think I will use
plastic in my product
because I can shape/
carve and make
perfect shape, there
are also a lot of
different colors or I
can use recycled
plastic. I will also
need it because it is
light weighted and
will look nice on the
product.

I might be using wood as

my base, or to carve on it,
I might also use it as my
product for spray paint
and acrylic to do the
colors, but I will most
probably not paint on it I
will most probably use
acrylics instead.

Paint:
There are two types of paint, one of which is spray to paint, which I think I will use for any background
colors, and will be easier and more exact, it will also give me more time to be able to make other
designs using the second type of paint which is acrylic paint,
however if I wanted to use any type of paint on wood it has to
be mdf wood.

Tools:

Clamp:
Clamps are indispensable within the workshop for holding and securing work.
They are available in many sizes and are used for securing work to the surface of
a bench. They are also used to hold wood together while the glue is drying.

Tenon saw:
The Tenon saw is a type of back saw this is because it has a steel or brass back to
the saw. The tenon saw is generally used for cutting mortise and tenon joints. The
tenon saw is good at cutting straight lines in wood. That I am going to use when I
do cut the pieces of wood.
Coping saws:
Coping saws are used for cutting different types of wood or plastic. They are very good at cutting
curved shapes in wood or plastic. Coping saws can be tricky to use you need to keep the saw in a
horizontal position for it to cut correctly. Coping saw blades can be easily broken if used
incorrectly. That I am going to use when I do carve the pieces of wood.

Try-square:
The try square is pushed against a straight edge of wood and a marking knife or
pencil is used to make straight lines on the product.

File:
Hand files are used to smooth rough or sharp edges on material. Files can be
used to smooth metals or woods. Hand files are held within the hand and are
pushed flat to the surface of the material. The file is then pushed forwards and
back to smooth the material. I will use this to finalize the wood carvings.
Chisel and mallet:
The chisel is a very dangerous tool it is usually used along with a mallet, this tool cannot be
used unless with a clamp and a mallet, the mallet is either to make sure that your hands arent
touching the product while chiseling it, it is also used to hammer down the chisel when it is
chiseling large parts of wood.

The sand paper:

The sand paper, is fairly good material for filling however for a stronger effect would
look for the file or the filling machine, the sand paper is usually used at the very end
when you color the product, at first you will have to color it all white then use the
sand paper to make sure its all dry and smooth, next I will apply the colors, and may
or may not want to smoothen them out again and make more coats. You can use
the rock to make it easier to use.

Joints:
Dowel Joint:
I think this is the second hardest joint that will stick together properly; I will try my
best to do it, but it will be very hard because of the exact proportions however it is
the best joint and needs the least amount of glue which is what I need because if I
put too much it might spill over and destroy the design or the wood. I will be
needing this joined to do the round part of the box, I think that it will be very helpful
for me, I will have to drill out the exact size of the stick I have available, and the exact
same length for each of the four holes, I will do this using the pillar drill.

Dovetail Joinery:
I could also use this joint for the sides, this will be helpful because it is one of the
strongest joints used a lot, I will be able to this joint because it is similar to the finger
joint, however the finger joint was not very successful, so I searched and I found the
Dovetail Joinery.
http://woodworking.about.com/od/joinery/p/ThroughDovetail.htm

Mitre Joints:
This is the best joint I found so far, it looks great, it is relatively strong, and
it is not too hard to do, if you have the correct measurements, I think this
is the one I will be using in my product. These joints are usually used in
frames, which are expensive and stay for a long time, I am planning to use
this joint on the edges of the product to keep it strong and reliable, which
was one important part of my target audiences choice. I might however
combine the dowel joint with the mitre joint to make it even stronger.

This is the machine that will help me make the joints or make

mainly used for acrylics but can also be used for wood. To use
this I will need to use 2D design.

Laser cutter:
This is the machine that will help me make the joints or
make different shapes for my clock using plastic. And also
makes shapes like that, it is also used for metal carvings.

WARCO:
This machine is mainly used to turn metal. It is also used to make holes or
inside parts in a product by wood, you can see that it has a lid to cover it, the
clop to clamp the product and the two wheels to move the product around,
the warco machine cuts wood by grinding them there for, for safety reasons
we need a face mask.

This machine is used for Wood Turning or wood carving. I need

Motion machine:
This machine is used for Wood only it is used to make holes and to
make other carvings I think this will be the most helpful machine if I
am going to make wooden joints. I will need eye glasses for

This machine is used for mostly metal it is similar
to the laser cutter but it is used to make smooth
nice shapes. I will need a face mask for protection.

This machine is used to make smooth edges and it also used to files shapes, you can see

Safety signs that I found :

I think this will be very helpful for me because it
will help me make the numbers/ hands the
actual wood flattening and etc., and I also know
that to use them I need to ask my teacher, I also
know that there is a machine that melts the
plastic and turns it into a smooth surface that we
can use, there is also a machine where it flattens
the wood, I think it is very important to know
this because I need to know all the safety
precautions for example now I know that when I
am using the machine I need to step away and
were goggles to protect my eyes from any little
pieces of wood.

Hinges:

Small
Medium

Large

Extra Large

The hinges are the most important part for longer garentee for
my product, the hinges have many uses, one of which we place
them on the back of the product, use the pillar drill to drill just
the right amount, not wanting to make an entire hole, then by
inserting a screw to confirm its placement. The hinge is used
to open and close something in one way. There is a variety of
sizes of hinges (small, medium, large and extra large), the small
hinge is used for small things, I think I am going to most
probably use the small one for the vertical design becausenot
any of the others fit, however for the horizantal one I can use
the range between the small to the large. The extra lage one is
used for very large projects, this is shown because of the
weight of it, and only a large product can stay stable in it and
fit. The dimensions for each are as follows:
Small: 4cm x 2.5cm, Medium: 6cm x 3.5, Large: 10 cm x 4.5,
Extra large: 8cm x 10cm
However these measurments may not be acurate for all of
them, it can change by a couple of millimeters, and for double
checking on my measuring I traced out the shapes, to make
sure.

The reason to why I did this research is because, I want my

target audience not only be able to use it but also be able to
hold it around and maybe they would like to use it for
different things, I also need to know the palm size because I
am planning on making a hand strap for when people need
to take it outside with them.
For my material I think I will be using either acrylic, wood,
rubber, or thread, I will design all different designs, do
another survey then determine which the best is for my
target audience.
I will also need the length of the hand because that is where
the box has to fit into, so it will not be stressful to hold

http://www.theaveragebody.com/average_hand_size.php

Conclusion to Research:
In conclusion to my research, I have developed new ideas by looking at other peoples products, taking ideas, looking at information
including joints, machinery and tools which of I am sure will affect my design greatly, I have also done a different type of research
called anthropometrics, this has helped me determine the width of the trap/bracelet. I have done enough of my research to get me
thinking of what I might want to do, I also know the perspective 29 people from my target audience, which in my opinion will be
enough, I have created a short and simple questionnaire to give me ideas of what they would like. I have concluded some things that
I am going to make which are, I am going to make at least two boxes, I will be using either the dowel joint or the mitre joint, I will
also be making a strap which I still havent decide out of what material, I also know that I am going to use the hinge for at least once
of them.

Environmental
aspects
No
I used wood and
acrylic, however
acrylic is used
more than
wood.
No
I used mostly
wood but I used
a little bit of
acrylic.

Why I chose this as my final design:

First product final design:
I chose this design as my final designs because when I asked my family members and most of them picked this one, and I
have asked why and the responses were that this design looked the neatest, had the most creative Islamic design and
that it has a meaning behind it therefore it will grab more attention.
Second product final design:
I have designed this product because; it matches the color scheme I have used for the previous one therefore the
consumer of the product would like to buy both of the products instead of one of them. I have also tried to incorporate
the curved lines for this to match to the other product even more.

Evaluation of my final design against the Design specification:
Specification

Achieved

How

Keep the cards from falling out.

Achieved

Keep the card clean.

Achieved

Make them easier to find.

Achieved

Have two holes for fingers.

Achieved

When the cards are stored they do not fall out

because of the sides that are up.
The cards stay clean because the parts were
the holes are and the openings on the top are
covered.
It is easier to find because of its rare color and
its artistic design that contain colorful design.
My final product has both holes.

Keep the cards together.

Achieved

It keeps the cards together neatly in two rows.

Have a divider for two spaces for cards

Achieved

Be larger than double the size of the cars by

at least 1 cm.

Achieved

It has an acrylic divider between the rows

however it is not fixed by a joint.
The size fits the cards.

Have an outside box

Achieved

It has an outside box

Keep the cards from getting lost.

Achieved

Be easy to open.

Not Achieved

Be easy to close.

Achieved

Have an eye catching design.

Achieved

Be stable.

Achieved

The cards do not get lost because the box is

very eye-catching and is not small which make
it easy to find.
It is not easy to open because if it is on a table
and there are a lot of cards inside it the cards
might fall out.
It is easy to close because the outside box
prevents the cards from moving.
It has a design at the back and on the front so if
placed on either side can be used and still looks
nice.
It is table on the table.

Be fixed.

Achieved

It is fixed.

Have transparent/semitransparent
part/parts to be able to see the cards.

Achieved

It is achieved for the inside box.

Not Achieved

It is not achieved for the outside box because it

got to messy with the glue.
It does not have curved edges however the
edges are not sharp.

Have curved edges, not to accidentally hurt

the target audience.

Impact of my design on end user (Mona Kassem):

Imp

Mr. Brazil

My end user is my mum, and she used this product to benefit her in many ways (shown in the pictures above), she used
it on her desk to keep all her very important things where she would need regularly, for example her stationary and
business cards, This impacted my mothers work aqlot because she know can keep everything organized and instead of
taking more time to look for the things that she needs she can put them in an eye catching box that reminds her where
they are and this keeps them from being lost. My mum also found other uses for this product as I mentioned before for
stationary.

Testing from end user (Mona Kassem)

What I
tested
How many
cards fit
well?

How I tested my
final product
I gathered a lot of
cards and put as
many as I could
without having the
cards overlapping on
one of the sides.

Was it
successful
Yes

Evaluation
For this particular
test my final
product was
successful because
the cards did hold
300 cards in total
without over flow.

Is the
material
strong?

My final product was

dropped from about
shoulder height

No

Is it stable
on the
table?

I tested it by placing
it on the table and
looking at the way it
was open and
closed.

No

Are the
cards
easily
accessible?

I tested this by
asking my end user
to put her fingers
through the holes
and next to both of
the stacks.

Yes

Do the
cards fall
out?

Do the
cards stay
clean?
Do the
cards get
bent or
damaged
in any
way?

No

I did this by leaving

the cards for inside
the box and leaving
it for 3 days and I
examined the cards.

Yes

The handle of the

inside box broke as
well as a crack
happened as a
consequence that
proves that the
material is not so
strong however this
can be improved by
having a joint with
the handle and the
divider.
Even though the
outside box was
stable on the table
the inside box when
pulled out was
slanting and this
could result to the
cards possibly falling
out.
The cards are easily
accessible because
you can fit two
fingers next to the
cards and there are
holes at the bottom
to pick up the last
cards.
The cards fall out
because the inside
box is not a snug fit
inside of the outside
box.
After putting the
cards inside the
outside box for 2
days I looked at
them again and they
were still clean and
they were not
damaged in any
way.

Do the
colors
match
with the
office?

This test was done

by placing it on the
office desk and
looking at it.

Yes

The colors are only

slightly darker than
the final product,
for example the
acrylic is there
except it is a little
darker.

Is the size
good?

This test was done

by placing it on the
office desk and
looking at it.

Yes

The size doesnt

take a lot of space
on the desk
therefore it is a
good size and it also
fits the cards.

Is the size
of the
inside
good to
match
with the
outside
box?

I did this by placing

the inside box inside
the outside box and
looking at them.

No

There was space on

the sides of the
outside box and the
inside box, as well
as the top and
bottom, this could
case the end user to
have difficulty in
using it, or the cards
falling out.
