    The five root winds are part of the subtle psycho-physical system in Tibetan medicine. Each wind supports an element and regulates a different function in the body. The five winds are: 1) the life-supporting wind in the brain regulating swallowing, breathing, and concentration, 2) the upward-moving wind in the chest regulating speech, energy, memory and diligence, 3) the all-pervading wind in the heart controlling motor activities, 4) the fire-accompanying wind in the stomach regulating digestion and metabolism, and 5) the downward-clearing wind in the rectum regulating excretion and uterine contractions during labor.
