PHYSICAL EDUCATION
DEPARTMENT POLICIES
Dress Requirements
1. All students must wear Panther P.E. t-shirt and shorts. Uniform items will be sold
throughout the school year. T-shirts are $10.00 and shorts are $10.00. Please
make checks payable to Lopez Middle School, otherwise cash is accepted.
2. Gym shoes and athletic socks are to be worn in P.E. class. Shoe laces are required
and no street shoes are permitted on the gym floor. For sanitary purposes, bare
feet will not be permitted.
3. Students with a medical or parental note will be excused from active participation,
but need to dress out for class unless otherwise directed. Every student will need
to be dressed everyday, unless otherwise directed by his/her coach. Alternate
assignments will be given for students unable to participate physically. All
P.E. clothing should be taken home and freshly laundered at the end of every
week.
Showering
1. Facilities for showering are available to all students. This is optional but
recommended.
2. Students will have to bring their own towel, shampoo, and body soap. No towels
will be provided.
Dressing area
1. All personal items are to be placed in the locker.
2. It shall be the responsibility of each student to keep the dressing room clean, neat
and tidy at all times.
3. No running or horseplay at any time in the locker room.
4. No food, gum or candy is permitted in P.E. at any time.
5. No cell phones out in the locker room at any time.
Valuables
1. Valuables should be left at home. Students will be held responsible for their own
belongings. Due to the large volume of students in P.E., coaches cannot be
responsible for valuables.
2. All valuables (i.e. jewelry, books, etc.) should be locked in the students school
locker. Cell phones are not allowed in the locker room.
3. No jewelry will be worn during P.E. class. Stud earrings are acceptable for
females.

Physical Education Participation


1. In order for any student to be excused from P.E. participation, he/she must have a
written note from a parent or guardian. If the excuse is for 3 days or more,
he/she must have a statement from medical doctor specifying the need and
the length of the recuperative period.
2. Note that there must be documented evidence from a medical doctor for any
student who is unable to fully participate in p.e. Restricted p.e. forms are
available from the coaches.
3. As stated earlier, students are expected to dress out everyday, even with a parent
or medical note.
Lockers
1. Each student will be assigned a locker that is equipped with a combination lock.
Students are not permitted to share lockers or gym uniforms with each other.
2. Lockers will only be used for gym uniforms, shoes, grooming materials
(AEROSOLS NOT ALLOWED), and shower items. All other items should be
kept in the school locker.
Injuries
1. All activities in the physical education program are supervised. First aid will be
referred to the school nurse. Should a serious accident occur during class, parents
will be notified by the school nurse.
2. Students are to report any injury that occurs during P.E. class to their teacher.
Conduct
1. Student safety is a priority in all P.E. classes. Students are to behave in an
appropriate manner.
2. Discipline in P.E. will be consistent with the school and district policy as outlined
in the Lopez student handbook. P.E. staff will utilize the Lopez Discipline Step
Process to address behaviors that are not conducive to the learning environment.
3. As part of the Physical Education curriculum, sportsmanship will be emphasized
in every activity.
Grading Procedures
1. Students will be graded in the following areas: proper dress-out (30%), active
participation (50%), and periodic assessments to include evaluation of skills and
written exams (20%).
