pypeuuis 18 August 2015, LETTER OF REQUEST - ENGLISH ONLY INSTRUCTION To whom it may concern: This letter serves as formal request by the Deperiment of Architecture to change the current parallel anguage policy to &n Englsh-only language policy. In order to give students the competency to communicate their acédémic portolo profcienly, compete inthe intemational Platform, and build their professional confidence, we belleve that we should implement @ policy of English-only instruction. The following reasons are offered for consideration: 4. Language of Practice ‘The Bachelor of Architecture (BArch), Bachelor of Architecture Honours (BArchHons) and Master of Architecture Professional (MArchProf) are designed to academically prepare students for candidete- and professional registration with the South Aftican Council for the Architectural Profession (SACAP). This governing body's language of business, training ‘end instruction, including the compulsory SACAP Professional Practice Exam (PPE) and Continuous Professional Development (CPD), is conducted in English only. Furthermore, professionals in the field are rarely, if at el, alowed fo submit architectural ‘work to local authorities or consultants in the built Industry in any language other than English. For professionally orientated degress, it is highly recommended that the ‘education be conducted in the lingua franca of practice. Teaching technical and industry jargon fo students in Afrikaans seems redundant if the language is not facilitated by Practice. English language focus will enhance students’ communication abilities and ‘success in practice, 2, National and Intemational Validation by Professional Registration Bodies In edition to national validation by SACAP, the degrees presented by the department are intemationelly validated by the Commonwealth Association of Architects (CAA).
