AUTISM

Laymans Definition - One of the most important things to know about children
with autism is that they are all different, and that autism affects them in many
different ways. There are three areas that are called the Triad of autism. These
are: socialization skills, language development/communication, and repetitive
behaviors (either physical or language). When a child with autism repeats parts
of movies, conversations, video games, that is called echolalia. Children with
autism have a difficult time understanding what language means, and may be
very literal. They dont always pick up on social cues. Tantrums and outbursts
are usually from frustration because they dont understand something and cant
express it. Students with autism may be able to read without comprehending
what they have read. Sensory issues are usually present.
Identification Identification of autism at school is usually done by the social
worker, speech and language therapist, and the district psychologist. They
usually use an assessment called the ADOS. There are also forms for parents
and classroom teachers to fill out. Identification can also be done with a medical
diagnosis. In order for school intervention, the autism has to affect the students
academic progress (speech, social work, resource room).
Accommodations Some things that might help the student when you work
with them in the classroom:
* give a motor break
* shorten assignments, chunk assignments
* watch for escalation of stress, this may cause loss of control
* give additional time, a quiet place if necessary
* use visual schedules, manipulatives, pictures, videos
* provide an alternate form of assessment
* Make sure they understand directions. (repeat, paraphrase,
have the student repeat the directions)
* Help find an organizational system that works for the student
(you may have to try several). Sometimes they may be too
obsessively organized.
* Comorbidity (other disabilities) may exist.
* Avoid sarcasm
