Example: Hori paid $300 after using a 20% discount voucher
What would he have had to pay if he had not had the voucher?
Lets write this out as an equation:
300 = 80%
80% x t = 300
80% = 0.8, so we can replace the 80%:
0.8 x t = 300
Now, we can turn this equation around so that we can find the value of t:
300 0.8 = t
300 0.8 = 375
How can we check this to see if this was the original number?
We need to find 20% of 375 and then take it away from 375 to see if the answer
is 300:
0.2 x 375 = 75
375 75 = 300
HOW TO REMEMBER
THIS
1. Remember to write the question out as an equation
2. Replace the percentages with their equivalent as a decimal
e.g 30% = 0.3
3. Switch the equation around so that you can find the
unknown number:
0.8 x t = 300 ---- 300 0.8 = t
4. Check to see if the answer you got was the original
number
e.g we took 20% of 375 away from 375 because the 300 was
80%
EXAMPLE QUESTIONS
1. David received $564,000 for selling his house, after the real
estate agent took 6% of it. How much did the house sell for
originally?
564,000 = 94%
94% x t = 564,000
0.94 x t = 564,000
564,000 0.94 = t
564,000 0.94 = 600,000
How do we check?
0.06 x 600,000 = 36,000
600,000 36,000 = 564,000
