SCHOLARSHIPS OF $500.00 EACH WILL BE GIVEN AWAY BY THE


SONS OF THE AMERICAN LEGION

RULES:

1. Applicant must be in his or her senior year of high school or a graduate from an accredited high
school after they have started their advanced education. Applicants may reapply the following
year if aid was or was not given.
2. Deadline date – Application must be in the scholarship committee’s possession by May 1st. They
may be dropped off at the American Legion Post at 122 5th St. or mailed to P.O. Box 691, Beverly,
OH 45715.
3. A committee of three (3) consisting of a representative of The American Legion, American Legion
Auxiliary and the Sons of The American Legion (appointed by their Commander or President)
shall have the duty of selecting the winners of the scholarships. In case of a conflict of interest,
the Commander or President of the represented organization may appoint another representative.
4. It shall be the duty of the scholarship committee chairman to notify the candidates if they have
won or lost the competition. The chairman shall also be required to follow as closely as possible,
the winners of the scholarships, to maintain a close relationship and report back to the Squadron.
5. MERIT SCHOLARSHIP winners shall be selected on the following basis:
Character 10% High standards of conduct, keen sense of right, strength of
Character, adherence to truth and conscientious devotion to
Church and daily duties.
Americanism 20% Fine ideals, love of country, willingness to accept a citizen’s
responsibilities.
Leadership 10% Ability to lead and accomplish through group action, personal
magnetism, guidance and thought of others.
Scholarship 50% Scholastic attainment, evidence of interest and application in
studies.
Basic Need 10% Actual need of financial assistance to continue higher
education. Financial statement from parents not required.
6. NEED SCHOLARSHIP winners shall be selected on the following basis:

Basic Need 50% Actual need of financial assistance to continue higher
education. Financial statement from parents not required.
7. The candidate must include the following material with his or her application:
a. Name and address of candidate.
b. Four (4) letters of recommendation. These may be photocopies since many scholarships
applications request the same materials.
I. One from clergyman of the church applicant attends.
II. One from the Principal, Assistant Principal or Guidance Councelor
of the high school applicant attends.
III. One from a member of Russell Chadwick Post of The American
Legion Family.
IV. One from a citizen of the community where the applicant lives or
from the family doctor.
c. Statement of extra curricular activities, participation in public affairs.
d. A brief biographical statement from the applicant including particular interests, hobbies,
and community participation.
e. A certified transcript or photostatic copy of high school grades.
8. Said Scholarship will cover all phases of education – College, Career, or Technical.
9. Scholarship will be paid in allotments to the recipient at the beginning of the school term and the
beginning of the second pay period providing the recipient informs the Squadron of their
achievement and are continuing their schooling ($250.oo each allotment). If the term is not
completed the money must be refunded.
