Chapter 1:
What is Music?

An art of sound in time that expresses ideas and emotions in significant forms through the
elements of rhythm, melody, harmony and color.
The tones or sounds employed, occurring in single line (melody) or multiple lines (harmony), and
sounded or to be sounded by one or more voices, instruments or both.
The written or printed score of a musical composition
Appreciation of or responsiveness to musical sounds or harmonies

Melody

Musical Sounds in agreeable succession or arrangement


o The succession of single tones in musical compositions, as distinguished from harmony
and rhythm
o The principal part in a harmonic composition

Harmony

Any simultaneous combination of tones, especially when blended into chords pleasing to the
ear, chordal structures, as distinguished from melody and rhythm

Rhythm

The pattern of regular or irregular pulses caused in music by the occurrence of strong and weak
melodic and harmonic beats.
