Body Cavities:
Spaces within the
body which
contain vital
organs
Dorsal (Posterior)
Cavity:
One long, continuous
cavity that is
located on the back
of the body,
divided into two
sections
1. Cranial Cavity =
contains the brain
2. Vertebral/Spinal
Cavity = contains
the spinal cord
Ventral (Anterior)
Cavities:
1. Thoracic Cavity =
located in the chest
contains the
heart in
pericardial
cavity, lungs in
pleural cavities,
mediastinum the region
between lungs
from sternum to
backbone that
Ventral (Anterior)
Cavities:
2a. Abdominal Cavity
= upper abdominal
cavity; contains the
stomach, liver, small
intestine, most of large
intestine
- also contains spleen
& gallbladder

Hypochondriac (right
