A memo from the principal of All Hallows Elementary informs parents that a first grade student named Harley Burry is currently receiving chemotherapy for childhood cancer. Harley's compromised immune system puts him at high risk of contracting communicable diseases. Parents are asked to notify the school and Harley's parents if their own child develops chickenpox, even on weekends or holidays, so Harley can receive appropriate treatment if exposed. The principal emphasizes creating a safe and secure learning environment for all students, including protecting Harley by sharing information about potential exposure to chickenpox.

As we continue to welcome our students back to school,
we discover new and unique characteristics of each one. This is to inform you that Harley Burry is presently enrolled and in Grade 1 at our school. Harley is the son of Chantel and Dave Burry of Clarkes Beach. Harley has been diagnosed with Childhood Cancer and is currently receiving chemotherapy under the care of the Pediatric Oncologist at the Janeway Childrens Health and Rehabilitation Centre in St. Johns, NL. On a regular basis he is required to receive treatments at the Janeway. When a child is receiving chemotherapy, their immune system is severely compromised and is at a high risk of contracting communicable diseases. While Harley is in Grade 1, there are many times throughout the school day when riding the bus, during recess and lunch breaks, and when participating in school activities and events that we are all together. If your child has developed or perhaps is developing chicken pox (even on a weekend or school holiday), please inform Harleys parents and school personnel so that appropriate treatment can be provided for him. Each child is special and needs to feel safe and secure in our learning environment. Help us protect Harley by letting us and his parents know of any occurrence of chicken pox to which he could be exposed. Chantel and Dave Burry can be contacted by telephone @ 709.788.2292 / 709.680.3962 / 709.770.4831. The email address is chantelburry@hotmail.com. Thank you for your attention to this most important matter. With your support, Harley and all of our other students will be safe and grow to be great contributors in our world.
