Nowadays, crime has increased in many countries and there has
been some discussion (debate, controversy) about types of
punishment. Although some people believe that punishments should be fixed, others think that punishment depends on the situation. First of all, there are people who think that fixed punishments are fair. That means that everyone will understand the consequences if they commit crimes, because they are equal. Secondly, this kind of punishment could reduce crime levels, on account of everybody knowing the results of committing specific crimes, such as murder, theft or other crimes with serious punishments like the death penalty. This would make people frightened of committing these crimes. Finally, having fixed punishments will help the government or juries with the legal process, due to there being fewer possible choices to make. On the other hand, people who believe that punishment is dependent on the situation might say that desperation can lead to crime, and that this kind of crime should carry a lesser punishment. For example, when a homeless person commits a crime to fulfil their basic needs, they should not be as responsible as a person who commits a crime for no reason. Also, crimes of passion should be punished less, because these people are not under emotional control. Finally, teenagers should be treated differently because of their minds not being fully developed. In conclusion, although fixed punishments might make solutions easier, I believe that punishments should depend on the circumstances of crimes.
