Evidence Based Care Plan

Learning Activity
Summary

Students choose a patient from clinical to demonstrate use of


an evidence based care plan prior to first class. Instructor
demonstrates development of evidence based care plan in class
using computer screen projector or blackboard. Enlists
students to contribute to developing care plan, find evidence
for specific nursing interventions. A short discussion at the end
of class to review learning. Prior to second class, students
retrieve six sources of evidence (clinical practice guidelines,
randomized controlled trials, research articles, expert opinion,
systematic reviews, etc) that apply to their patient. At the
start of the second class, the instructor reviews a completed
care plan example with class, providing possible resources,
answering specific questions. Students start or continue the
evidence based care plan in class with instructor available for
assistance. Care plans are submitted electronically to the
instructor with all articles or links to guidelines.

Two entire 50 minute class sessions. First class- introduction to


evidence based care plan- 10 minutes. Completion of example
care plan in class-30 minutes. Class discussion- 10 minutes.

Second class- review of example care plan- 10 minutes; student


work- 40 minutes.
