ChildpovertyinScotlandisnowsoseverethatteachersare
beingsentadviceonhowtospotifachildintheirclassisgoing
hungry,amidevidencethattheproblemishavingan
increasinglyseriousimpactoneducation.
Thenewguidance,whichwillbedistributedtoschoolsand
collegesacrossScotlandnextweek,warnsthattheissueof
hungeramongpupilsismovingfromtheexceptionaltothe
morecommonplaceasfamiliesstruggletomakeendsmeet.
TheadvicehasbeendrawnupbytheEducationalInstituteof
Scotland(EIS),thecountryslargestteachingunion,aftera
surveyof300schoolsandcollegessuggestedthatteachersare
increasinglyhavingtohelpunderfedpupils.Itisthefirsttime
thatasectiononhungerhasbeenincludedintheguidance.

familiescanseekhelp,theguidancesays.
Morethan222,000childreninScotlandarecurrentlydescribed
asbeinginpoverty,buttheEISwarnedthatthenumberwould
riseiftheGovernmentsausterityagendacontinued.Schools
andcollegesarepartofsociety,andsoarenotimmunefromthe
problemsofthatwidersociety,saidtheunionsgeneral
secretaryLarryFlanagan.
TheEISsaidtheaimofthenewguidancewastogivepractical
advicetoteachers,allowingthemtopovertyprooftheir
classrooms.The20pagebooklet,entitledFaceuptoChild
Poverty,alsooffersadviceonschooluniforms,fieldtrips,
homeworkandclassequipmentallofwhichcanbe
problematicforimpoverishedchildrenandtheirfamilies.
Somepupilsmayhavenooptionbuttowearthewrongtypeof
clothestoschooliftheirparentscannotaffordthecorrectitems
andmaynotfeelcomfortabletellingtheirteacherswhythey
broketherules,itsays.Schoolsarealsoadvisedtoensure
uniformsareasinexpensiveaspossibleandsetupclothes
exchanges.
IainGray,ScottishLaboursopportunityspokesperson,saidthe
newguidancepaintedadamningpictureoftheimpactof
povertyonschools.Inawelloff21stcenturycountrysomeof
thesefindingsareshameful,buttheywillnotsurpriseanyone
whodealsonadaytodaybasiswiththegrowthoffoodbanks
andtheimpactoftheTorygovernmentswelfarereforms,he
added.
AScottishGovernmentspokespersonsaidministerswere
committedtotacklingpoverty"headon"and"welcomed"the
newadvicetoteachers.Wehaveinvested296minwelfare
mitigationmeasuresandaround329movertwoyearsto
expandfreeearlylearningandchildcare,"theyadded.Butwe
dothisagainstabackdropofaUKGovernmentwhichistrying
