How to write an Persuasive Paper To persuade you want to convince your readets to feel the same way you do. You must make the issue clear and include facts and reasons that will give you strong support for your opinion. Persuasive writing authoritatively defends a position using precise and relevant evidence, The writer convinces readers in spite of their concerns, biases, and expectations. “Authoritatively defends a position” means that you must first make a clear statement aboul what you want your readers to believe. Once you have made the statement. you must support it with facts and ideas that will help your reader understand it, and if possible, to agree with you, In addition, you must work to convince readers who may not agree with you. How might you address their concerns? What will you use as a counter argument? Good persuasive writing does the following: ®* It informs the reader what the writer is trying to make them think or feel A? It gives readers several strong pieces of evidence to convince them to agree # It provides evidence using convincing language A It Recognizes that not all readers will agree with the writer, and addresses the feelings of those readers in a counter argument. How to persuade: In the introduction of a persuasive essay. the writer should begin by briefly introducing the general subject they are about to discuss. Then the writer narrows down the subject by writing out a clear statement of the issue and their opinion. (That is your thesis statement) Give background information, and then end the introduction by briefly stating three positions that will be used to defend the position. In the body of the essay. the writer should include reasons for supporting the opinion. Each reason should have supporting details that further support the opinion and help persuade the reader. Supporting details might be an example, a quotation, statistic, or other data. Prove to readers that this really matters. In other words, readers will have something to gain by taking the same stand as the writer. In addition. the third body paragraph of the essay will address counter arguments that the reader might have. Last of all, end a persuasive essay with a summary of your points and a strong argument, summary. or call to action: Example ~ If you were thirteen years old, wouldn't you want to have your own spending money? Tip: Always identify the audience you are trying to reach and consider their possible objections!
