OBJECT:TO FIND THE SOLUTION OF THE GIVEN SYSTEM OF

HOMOGENEOUS EQUATION
PROCEDURE:
a) The given system of homogeneous equations can be written in the form:

AX=0
where A is a m x n matrix of coefficients
where X is a n x 1 column vector [x 1 x2 x3..xn] of
variables
where O is a m x 1 zero vector
b) Now, find the determinant of the coefficient matrix A. If matrix A is nonsingular then the given system of homogeneous equations will have a trivial
solution i.e. unique solution where x1=0, x2=0, x3=0 ., xn=0.
c) If matrix A is singular i.e. the determinant of A is zero then the given system of
homogeneous equation will have infinite solutions. Then, in order to find the
solution we have to reduce the matrix A in upper triangular form by applying
elementary transformations.
d) Since, the rank of matrix A is less than the number of variables therefore
introduces some parameter (n-r in numbers where r is the rank of matrix A) and
find the solutions in term of the parameters.

RESULTS:
A)

THE GIVEN SYSTEM OF HOMOGENEOUS EQUATIONS x+3y2z=0

2xy+4z=0
x-11y+4z=0
WILL HAVE INFINITE SOLUTIONS WITH BASIS z = [-10
8
7]WHERE z IS A PARAMETER.

B)

THE GIVEN SYSTEM OF HOMOGENEOUS EQUATON 2x+3y-zt=0

x-y+2z-4t=0
3x+y+3z-4t=0
6x+3y-7t=0
HAVE ONLYTRIVIAL SOLUTION X= [0 0 0 0].

CALCULATION

X+3Y-2Z=0 2X-Y+4Z=0 X-11Y+14Z=0

SOLUTION:

THE GIVEN SYSTEM OF HOMOGENEOUS EQUATIONS CAN BE WRITTEN IN

MATRIX FORM AS:

AX=

where A is a 3x3 matrix

where X is a 3x1 column vector
where O is a 3x1 zero vector

THE GIVEN SYSTEM OF HOMOGENEOUS EQUATION WILL HAVE TRIVIAL

SOLUTION i.e. x=0,y=0 AND z=0 IF DETERMINANT OF A IS NOT ZERO
OTHERWISE IT WILL HAVE INFINITE SOLUTION.
DET A=
0

SINCE THE DETERMINANT OF A IS ZERO THEREFORE THE SYSTEM OF

EQUATION WILL HAVE INFINITE SOLUTIONS.
INORDER TO FIND THE SOLUTION WE HAVE TO APPLY ELEMENTARY
TRANSFORMATION .
APPLYING ELEMENTARY TRANSFORMATIONS TO COEFFICIENT MATRIX A ,WE
GET

MATRIX A=

R2R2-2R1;

R3R3-R1;

R3R3-2R2;

NOW THE MATRIX A IS REDUCED TO UPPER TRAINGULAR FORM AND THE

SYSTEM OF EQUATION IS REDUCED TO:

AX=

WHICH GIVES
x+3y-2z=0 8z-7y=0

WHICH GIVES
y= 8/7 z

AND

x=-10/7 z

THEREFORE ,THE BASIS OF THE GIVEN SYSYTEM OF HOMOGENEOUS

EQUATION IS :

where z is a parameter

X+3Y-2Z=0 THE GIVEN SYSTEM OF HOMOGENEOUS EQUATIONS : 2XY+4Z=0

X-11Y+14Z=0
HAVE INFINITE SOLUTION WITH BASIS z =

B)

2X+3Y-Z-T=0
X-Y+2Z-4T=0

3X+Y+3Z-4T=0 6X+3Y-7T=0

SOLUTION:

THE GIVEN SYSTEM OF HOMOGENEOUS EQUATIONS CAN BE WRITTEN IN

MATRIX FORM AS:

AX=

where A is a 4x4 matrix

where X is a 4x1 column vector where O is a 4x1 zero vector
THE GIVEN SYSTEM OF HOMOGENEOUS EQUATION WILL HAVE TRIVIAL
SOLUTION i.e. x=0,y=0 AND z=0 IF DETERMINANT OF A IS NOT ZERO
OTHERWISE IT WILL HAVE INFINITE SOLUTION.

DET A=
-58

SINCE THE DETERMINANT OF A IS NOT ZERO THEREFORE THE SYSTEM OF

EQUATION WILL HAVE TRIVIAL SOLUTION i.e.

2X+3Y-Z-T=0
THE GIVEN SYSTEM OF HOMOGENEOUS EQUATIONS :
3X+Y+3Z-4T=0
7T=0

HAVE TRIVIAL SOLUTION i.e.

X-Y+2Z-4T=0
6X+3Y-
