McDermonds 2nd Grade - Curriculum Overview

Specials Schedule:
Monday: Art/P.E.
Tuesday: Library
Wednesday: Spanish/Music

Friday: Music
Reading:
The students practice reading smoothly, and develop skills to help
them understand their reading materials. We will use the
Orton/Gillingham program for spelling, handwriting, and phonics. There
will be a time period for reading groups that are organized by skill level
and for Readers Workshop when students work individually on
concepts they need to master. We are using a program called SRA
Imagine It.
Math:
Students should master addition and subtraction facts in 2 nd grade.
They will also learn to do long addition and subtraction. Money and
time are important 2nd grade math concepts, as well. We will be using
the Envisions Realize math program.
Language Arts:
Students will learn to write complete sentences and paragraphs in 2 nd
grade. They will focus on making their writing readable and interesting
by using excellent handwriting, structure, spelling, and ideas.
Science/ Social Studies
Our science and social studies concepts are imbedded in our I.B.
themes. We will be studying:

An N = needs to improve
A check mark = meets expectations
A star = exceeds expectations
Circled work is on grade level and should be completed by all students.

Starred work is more challenging and should be completed by

advanced students.
