PROBLEM SET #1 (100pts)

1. To satisfy design limitations it is

necessary to determine the effect of
the 2KN force on the fixed beam
shown in Fig. 1. For this purpose,
replace this force by its equivalent of
two forces at A, Ft parallel and Fn
perpendicular to the beam. Determine
Ft and Fn. (10 pts)

2. Determine the resultant R of the
two forces applied to the bracket as
shown in Fig. 2. Write R in terms of
unit vectors along x- and y-axes
shown. (15 pts)

4. (a) Calculate the moment of the 90N force about point O for the condition
=15 deg (see fig. 4). Also, determine
the value of (in deg) for which the
moment about O is (b) zero and (c) a
maximum (15 pts)

3. The 30 N force P is applied
perpendicular to the portion BC of the
bent bar in Fig. 3. Determine the
moment P about point B and about
point A. (15 pts)

5. A 400 N force is applied to the

welder slender bar at an angle = 20
deg as shown in Fig. 5. Determine the
equivalent force-couple system acting
on the weld at (a) point A and (b) point
O. (10 pts)

6. Compute the resultant of the three

forces shown in Fig.6. Locate its
intersection with X- and Y-axes. (20
pts)

7. If the resultant of the two forces and

couple M passes through point O as
shown in Fig. 7, determine M. (15 pts)
