Question
Bank Tubes (gas) T&E: Air is blown at a
rate of 140 m3/min (measured at 21oC and
700 mm Hg) at right angles to a tube back 10
pipes at 10 spaces wide and 10 rows deep.
The length of each pipe is 2.5 m. The tubes
are in staggered arrangement, and the
center-to-center distance of 8 cm. It is
desired to heat the air from 21 oC to 38oC at
atmospheric pressure. What steam pressure
must be used? The pipes which are used are
Sch. 40 standard 1-inch steel pipes.

Given:
V = 140 m3/min
T1 = 21oC
T2 = 38oC
MWair= 28.84 g/mol
P (at T1) = 700 mm
Hg
10 spaces wide
10 rows wide
10 rows deep

L = 2.5
ST = 8 cm = 0.08 m
R = 8.314 J/(mol*K)
1 in Sch 40
Do =1.315 in = 0.03340 m
Di =1.049 in = 0.02664 m
x=0.133 in = 0.003378 m

What steam pressure must be used?

Lets find the density!

PV = nRT
n = m/MW
PV = mRT/MW
= m/V = P*MW/(RT)

= 1.101 Kg/m3

Lets find mass flow rate and velocity!

m = 2.569 Kg/s
Smin = (ST Do)*L*(no. of spaces)
Smin = (0.8 m 0.03340 m)(2.5 m)(10)
=1.165 m2

Vinf = 2.003 m/s

Lets find the average

velocity!

Vave = 2.980 m/s

ASSUME Ts = 100oC

= 64.75oC
= 337.9 K

P (atmospheric pressure) = 101325 Pa

= m/V = P*MW/(RT)

= 1.040 Kg/m3

ASSUME Ts = 100 C
o

Cp = 1015.19 J/(mol*K)
= 2.016*10-5 Pa*s
k = 0.02895

Pr = 0.707

Re = 5134.59

Lets find h!

h = 32.33

Since exchanger is staggered and has

10 rows
=
= /= 2.0743
=1.3214
h=h* = 43.72

Lets check

!
m*Cp*(T2 - T1) = h***L*(no. of pipes
deep)*(no. of pipes wide)*
Solving for :

U
=69.67oC
=oC69.67oC
Use new value :(

ASSUME Ts = 69.67oC

= 322.75 K
= 1.089 Kg/m3
Cp = 1013.40 J/(mol*K)
= 1.951*10-5 Pa*s
k = 0.02793
Pr = 0.708

Re = 5555.63

Lets find h..Again!

h = 32.5493
h=h =32.5493*1.3214
h=43.01

Lets check.Again!
m*Cp*(T2 - T1) = h***L*(no. of pipes
deep)*(no. of pipes wide)*
Solving for :
=69.339oC
=69.339oC
P (using Perrys) = 30.795 kPa
