Excitation Systems
Generator and Unit Protection
Synchronization
Measuring and Metering
Static Starter System

Following types are common:

Brushless excitation systems, with rotating
exciter machines and Automatic Voltage
Regulator (AVR), or
Static excitation systems (SES), feeding
rotor directly from thyristor bridges via
brushes
Main functions of the excitation system are to
provide variable DC current with short-time
overload capability, controlling terminal voltage
with suitable accuracy, ensure stable operation
with network and/or other machines, contribution to transient stability subsequent to a fault,
communicate with the power plant control system and to keep machine within permissible
operating range.
Main Features
ABB supplies state of the art microprocessorbased voltage regulators for synchronous
machines with rotating exciter and static excitation systems for high performance control of all
kinds of synchronous machines (motors and
generators). Our product range provides the
possibility to comply with any customer specification.

Excitation Systems
Business Application
In power plant excitation systems has a powerful impact on generator dynamic performance
and availability, it ensures quality of generator
voltage and reactive power, i.e. quality of
power plant delivered energy to consumers.

Customer Benefit
Advantages of ABB excitation systems are:
Most modern, state of the art technology
Reduced operation costs: less maintenance time, less outage time due to modern fault tracing programs and tools as well
as possible remote diagnosis
Better contribution to power supply
stability: faster response time and better
stabilization of power oscillations due to
IEEE Power System Stabilizers (PSS)

Depending on power plant layout and its

functional concept the hardware should
allow a tailored solution with a minimum of
components
A maximum degree of integrated protection
and belonging logics should be possible in a
system to reduce the auxiliary components,
thus increasing availability, dependability and
security of the overall protection concept.

Higher availability due to automatic

redundant excitation systems
We provide a worldwide support network for
service and spare parts. We have the largest
human resource dedicated to excitation business worldwide and provide professional
training at ABB University.
ABB static excitation systems are simply the
most sophisticated.

Generator and Unit Protection

Business Application
The term generator unit protection is the
combination of protections for generator; unit
transformer and auxiliary transformer in power
and waste to energy plants. Generators and
unit transformers are subject to a number of
possible hazards for which protection should
be provided. The main objective of generator
protection is to detect faults and abnormal conditions as fast as possible and, in case of fault,
to avoid extending the damage to a minimum.
Main Features
Protection scheme for Generator and unit
transformers depend on many factors, such as
size and importance of the machine, type of
prime mover, grounding, protection philosophy
etc, thereto, two main subjects must be taken
into consideration at the design stage:
Proper overall concept with coordinated
main and backup protection functional
strategy. Selection should be based more
on generators importance than on its rating

Customer Benefit
ABB unit protection is a modular hardware
flexible concept based on microprocessortechnology allowing individual user the selection of the protection functions considering
adequate redundancy. These ensure a reliable,
safe, and economical operation of the generator.

Synchronization
Business Application
Life network systems components cannot be
connected unless their voltage curves coincide
otherwise the electrical stresses become too
high and can lead to distortion of systems
equipment. While with direct current it is sufficient to have same system components
voltages and polarities, with three-phase alternating current system the voltage, frequency,
phase angle and phase sequence must match
together. Synchronization instruments are used
in all power generation plants and networks to
ensure safe and reliable operation.

Main Features
The standard synchronizing instruments are
double frequency meter, double voltmeter and
synchronoscope. Today digital control technology offers the option of feeding the input
signals of these instruments directly to an automatic synchronization device, which independently trips the closing operation at the right
time. When switching-on networks parts, it is
sufficient to use an automatic synchronization
instrument, e.g. the synchrocheck design of the
SYNCHROTACT family range, which prevents
switching in asynchronous mode with high
differences in phase angles and voltages.
Automatic synchronization equipment is also
recommended when switching-on generators
with life network. This brings automatically the
speed and voltage of the generator into a
preset tolerance range before connecting both
system, under the consideration of voltage,
frequency, phase angle and circuit breakers
switching times. Digital dual channel and
redundant synchronizing systems are available
allowing the selection of a higher degree of
safety and availability.

Customer Benefit
Our innovative devices and systems applications provide you with a unique features and
quality. If synchronizing system is not properly
adjusted or fail, stress on synchronous
machine will be the result and the whole plant
trips or even the whole synchronous machine
will be damaged. Therefore ABB synchronizing
system is a safety relevant system that assists
you to achieve reliable and economical power
supply. We can provide you also with a worldwide support network and professional training.

Measuring and Metering

Static Starter System

Business Application
The gas turbine needs help to come to its firing
point (around 60% of rated speed). For gas
turbines of above 40 MW this help can be
provided in two basically different ways:
Pony motor with gearbox that engages on
the main shaft
A Static Frequency Converter (SFC) connected directly to the generator terminals
that will drive the generator as a motor for
the start-up phase

In power generating plants measuring and

metering equipment of high accuracy class are
used to determine the values and amount of
power supplied from the generating plant to the
consumers. This includes among others current, voltage, active and reactive power.
These measures will be used for billing of the
consumed power and statistics. We integrate
these equipment in our ICE solution ensuring
reliable and economical solution.

Main Features
ABB static starter will softly accelerate the
generator without vibrations or voltage drop in
the grid. The same SFC can be used for purging and slow turning during cooling down. One
SFC can be used to start several generators
one after the other through selection boards.

Reliable start and higher availability of the

gas turbine

Customer Benefit
ABB was the first company to identify this
possibility and to implement it. The static
starter has proven to be an extraordinary reliable and indispensable system for gas turbo
sets. Our developed system ensures the
following benefits:

The mechanical wear of the SFC is limited

to the cooling ventilators

Lower investments (compared to mechanical solutions)
