A. Personal Statement
My purpose in applying to the Master of Science program in Dental Hygiene is to continue my education in the
field of dental hygiene, a field that I already know and love, taking it to a higher level. This would allow me to
further my career in the clinical setting, and also in the research and public service arenas. I can gain from the
experience of others who are in the field and learn to use resources available to increase access to care. I
want to offer advanced hygiene treatment, increase health promotion and disease prevention. Along with my
passion for dental hygiene, I take a great interest in the overall health of my patients. I want be a part of the
research of the correlation between oral health and overall health, on nutrition and the oral-systemic link. It is
my great desire to use my continuing education to help in endeavors such as this, and to take dental hygiene
education beyond the walls of private practice.
Clinical dental hygiene has opened many doors for me. I am interested in preparing new hygienists to be a
beacon of hope and to become valuable members of the oral health care team. I feel I would succeed in this
graduate program because it is in the field that I love. When I got into hygiene school and all of the classes and
material were directed and focused on oral health and patient care, I thrived. By nature, I enjoy working as
hard as I can when I can partner with peers that share a vision and a strong work ethic. With a graduate
degree from UCSF, I would be able to use my clinical experience and research skills to become a valuable
mentor and partner in the growth of the dental field locally, and globally.
