Digging up history
Open
8am-6pm

By Jessica Howard
Bungaree Primary School
students will trade their
pencils for shovels next term
as they take part in an archaeological dig.
To be held at the site of the
old Bungaree Police Station,
students will join forces with
the Bungaree Historical Society to draw up a map and
uncover artefacts.
The project, which will tie
in with the schools ongoing
history project and construction of the Bungaree History Walk, was made possible thanks to a $500 grant
awarded to them by the
Moorabool Shire Council.
The Margaret Moritz Youth
Heritage Award funds a
learning activity or research
project that focuses on an
aspect of local history and
responds to the year 5 and 6
history curriculum.
The award honours the
memory of Margaret Moritz,
an enthusiast of the history
and heritage of Moorabool
Shire.
Bungaree Primary School
principal, Calvin Tromp said
both the teachers and students were very excited for
the upcoming project.
We have been doing an ongoing history project for the
past five years, which has
seen the students investigate
the history of the town and
area, and now with the donation from this great award
the students have chosen a
site and will take part in an
archaeology investigation,
he said.
In the 1970s an accident
occurred where a truck lost
its brakes and ran into the
old police station, it was a
bit of a tragedy and they
never rebuilt it as it was later
demolished. While the site
is now vacant we believe

Pee-Wee off to
play the Kiwis
Bacchus Marsh ice hockey
star Connor Sidari-Alley will
soon travel to New Zealand
to compete in the 2015 PeeWee Tournament.
The 11-year-old was selected to play in Queenstown
for the South Australian
State Under-13 squad, where
he will verse six other teams
from Australia and New
Zealand.
Connor was unable to try
out for the under-13 Victorian team earlier this year
due to a busy schedule playing for the under-11 Atoms,
however when the South
adopted in 2012.
Also a member of the Maddingley Park Committee of
Management (Maddingley
Park is included in the heritage overlay), will be offered
a non-voting membership on
the heritage advisory committee - similar to a position
held by Gordon Recreation
Reserve.
However a recommendation to increase the term
of membership from three
years to four years was not
adopted.
West Ward Councillor Tom
Sullivan and Woodlands
Ward Councillor Pat Toohey
both raised concerns with
the proposed four-year
tenure.
My concern is with the
four years, a two year term
would be more acceptable,
Cr Toohey told the meeting.
Positions for new membership of the MHAC have been
sought through nominations
from member organisations
and community representatives and will be considered at the October council
meeting.

The changes to the official warning notice

Road Policing Command Superintendent

Bulky Goods
More than half the retail expenditure of residents is
escaping the Municipality, primarily to Melton and
Ballarat, especially bulky goods such as whitegoods.
While the general consensus is for consolidation of
existing precincts, there is a strong call for providing a
location for bulky-goods retailing on the edge of Bacchus
Marsh. This is proposed to stem significant escape
expenditure from retail offerings associated with this type
of development such as homemaking and whitegoods.

Retail Strategy
Retail floorspace within Moorabool is approximately
31,200sqm; 80 per cent of this is within the Bacchus
Marsh region, mostly the Town Centre.
More than half of the retail expenditure by residents of
Moorabool is currently escaping the municipality, primarily
to Melton and Ballarat; food expenditure is being retained
while the majority of non-food expenditure is being lost.
Analysis reveals that around 6,000sqm of bulky goods/
homemaker floorspace is supportable in Bacchus
Marsh and would contribute to reducing non-food retail
expenditure escaping Moorabool.
Lack of retail service variety in Ballan was identified as a
major issue and the strategy sets out that by 2041 Ballan
is considered able to support new cafes/restaurants,
convenience retail stores, a discount variety outlet and
more retail services.
At 11,500 residents, a total of 13,000-14,000 sqm of retail
floorspace will be required. This could be provided in
Ballan at 8,000 sqm, Gordon at 3,000 sqm and elsewhere
at 1,000 sqm.
The Retail Strategy recommendations are:
Optimise the retail mix and encourage a concentration
of appropriate and diverse facilities within Bacchus
Marsh Town Centre
Position Bacchus Marsh Town Centre for growth,
keeping its role as the key activity centre for Moorabool,
and improve movement in the town centre
Create a sense of place for the Bacchus Marsh Town Centre
Provide a broader range of facilities and services in and
around Bacchus Marsh Town Centre
Develop Moorabool as a retail tourism destination
New/expansions of activity centres to serve growth
areas (i.e., Darley and Stonehill)
Out-of-centre development in Bacchus Marsh (i.e.,
bulky goods)
Facilitate the improvement of the retail offer in Ballan
Town Centre (i.e., domestic need and retail tourism)
Encourage the small towns to reach their potential.

Ballan District Health & Care has fired a
nursing home worker previously charged
by the homicide squad over the deaths of
four patients in his care.
The 59-year-old male from Melton was
employed at BDH&C as a CDC coordinator of nursing home services for approximately three weeks, during September of
this year.
However in December 2006, the Herald
Sun reported that the man in question
had faced four charges of Conduct Endangering Life at a Western Suburbs nursing
home he worked at, over the deaths of
four patients in four months.
The report, by journalist Mark Butler,
said that the Magistrate dismissed the
charges because there was not enough
evidence for him to stand trial.
The Melton man was also cleared of
charges relating to thefts from patients in
his care.
No convictions have ever been recorded
against the ex-employee of BDH&C.
CEO Wayne Weaire (BDH&C) said that
all appropriate background checks were
conducted before he was employed, in-
cluding national police checks and reference checks with reputable organisations.
However when the Moorabool News
googled the man, the first hit to appear
was the Herald Sun story, with the headline including the words Accused Killer.
The 59-year-olds employment at BDH&C
was terminated soon after his background
was exposed.
We are a very small agency, and its just
about the community having confidence
in what were doing as much as anything, Mr Weaire said.
The Moorabool News contacted the
59-year-old man and asked if he was disgruntled by the decision to sack him, after
being proved innocent in a court of law.
I feel I was caught up in the crossfire of
an internal political mess.
The Board have talked about it and
they told me it was a bad look for the
community.
It is quite disappointing as I feel with
my experience I could have made a difference in improving the services to the
community as it is all in a bit of a mess.
Asked if he would be making an unfair
dismissal claim he replied, I dont think I
can as a new employee.
