    Hydrocephalus is a condition caused by an imbalance between the production and absorption of cerebral spinal fluid in the brain, resulting in an excess buildup of fluid that increases pressure within the skull. It occurs in 0.5-4 out of every 1000 births and can be congenital due to maldevelopment or infection or acquired later in life due to infection, tumors, or hemorrhaging. With modern treatment using shunts to drain excess fluid, survival rates for hydrocephalus patients have greatly improved to 95% for those treated with shunts compared to only 46% for those without treatment.
