Analysis of Data

Through the use of the stress-strain curve we observed the linear region to obtain
the Modulus of Shear G:
Torsional Shear: Tr/J
Shear Strain: r/L
L = 9 in. = 0.2286 m
D = .75 in. = 0.01905 m
J for a Hexagon = 0.133d4(3/2) = 1.5169*10-8 m4
Data from Excel:

Torsional Shear Stress (N/m2)

Shear Strain (m/m)

G = (2 1)/( 2 1) = 30227295.9 - 7760063.741)/( 0.000436111- 0.00014537)
= 77.275 GPa

Using the following equation we determined Poissons Ratio:

G = E/2(1+ ) =>

= (E/2G) - 1

E = 29ksi = 200G
= (200GPa/2(77.275GPa)) 1 = .2941
Using the following equation we determined the Theoretical Torque:
R = .009525 m
T = (GJ)/r
@ 0.6 Degrees Rotation: T = (77.275*109*1.5169*10-8*.000436111)/.009525
Tth = 53.67 N-m
