We established the partnership and set out the project idea. Other partners also inputted into the idea and WAVES was developed as a means of sharing best practice ideas and exploring inter-cultural learning models. In the UK, the Wave Project focused on its core activity ~ surfing — but worked with a new client group: adults with additional learning needs. This work enabled us to test out our model of developing social competences through outdoor learning on a group of Participants who faced different challenges to those of our core client group. We aimed to evaluate the project in the same Way as our mainstream projects and compare and contrast results with other partners. Participants were referred by Council-run day centres working with adults with Tearning disabilities, and placed on a course lasting six weeks. Sessions took place during the week, usually on Friday mornings, when participants would normally be in the day centre. Transport was provided by the day centres themselves, who brought participants to the beach in a minibus. Participants met up at the surf school, got ‘changed and assembled on the beach for a safety briefing with the surf instructors. Volunteers also took part in the sessions. Generally participants were assigned their ‘own volunteer and worked with them throughout the session, Over the course of the six weeks, participants got to know the volunteers ‘and each other, worked on their surfing ‘and gained more confidence in the sea as they improved. Sessions took place in warmer summer and autumn months, so there was no problem with cold weather. Conditions in the sea were generally ‘g00d, though occasionally the water was flat and the waves were very small! After the sea session, clients got changed on the beach, had their lunch and returned back to their day centre in the minibus. In addition to the beach sessions, Participants also took part in indoor activities before and after the course. ‘The pre-course sessions were designed to introduce participants to surfing, and explore some of the practical issues such as trying on wetsuits ete. The post-course groups were evaluation sessions designed. to explore what participants liked about ing in the sea, what they didn’t like, and how they felt the course had changed their learning perceptions, Wave Project International Conference “The Wave Project host an nterational conference in about the benefits of outdoor learning. Picking up Wild Mushrooms In many rural areas of Portugal picking up wild mushrooms is an old tradition, repeated year after year during Autumn and Winter. In difficult times mushrooms, these gifts of the Nature, were called “the meat of the poor” not only for their appearance but also for their flavour when they are properly cooked. They were valuable food supplements for the hungry population. But this “meat of the poor” has been definitely adopted by the population in general, especially in gourmet cooking. The permanent search and picking of mushrooms in forests obliged several European countries to take measures in order to regulate this activity guaranteeing a sustainable picking of the wild specimen. In Portugal no legislation on this process of mushrooms was set up, thus ‘becoming in the last years a Paradise for those who devote themselves to the picking and commerce of wild mushrooms. Furthermore the aceident of Chemobil in 1986 has affected several European countries with radioactivity contamination in mushrooms. Portugal happily, located far from the accident place, escaped from that terrible environmental disaster. This workshop introduced participants to the diversity and curiosities about the fimgi kingdom. It included an interactive and visually illustrated (ppt slides and video) and a component on the major fungal groups, the natural and cultural history of fungi, and their significance in ecosystem function This part was foliowed by a hands-on session where it was possible to examine, handle and identify specimens brought along by the trainer. Participants have learnt about the important characteristics and techniques for identifying fungi using different resources including field guides and keys. ‘The objectives ofthis acti ty were the following: Raising awareness of the of biodiversity and ecological importance and of ‘wild mushrooms preservation; Informing participants about the rules for picking up wild mushrooms in a sustainable way; Providing information about the way to safely identify mushrooms.
