Alien Wavelength
Transport

Efficiently Controlling and Managing 3rd Party Wavelengths

Optical transport and IP / MPLS have evolved as the dominant technologies in todays core networks. Yet most core
networks are still too inefcient and limited to cope with the required trafc growth and the declining revenue
per bit. To address these challenges, a new core network architecture that signicantly reduces the number of
optical interfaces is critical. The integration of colored optical interfaces directly into IP / MPLS routers and other
types of client equipment referred to as alien wavelength transport leads to a more efcient and optimized
core network architecture. Compliance with the ITU-T G.698.2 specication allows support for different vendor
technology in combination with transponder-based wavelength services. However, special emphasis needs to be
placed on planning, controlling and managing alien wavelengths. As most operators IP / MPLS and optical transport
technology is operated by different units, employing different management concepts requires an innovative
solution for alien wavelength transport.

Our Solution
Managed Alien Wavelengths
In our FSP 3000 scalable optical transport solution,
we have developed a standards-compliant and
integrated set of functionalities that support alien
wavelength transport, enabling efcient planning,
control and management of 3rd party wavelengths.
To aid with the planning process, our comprehensive
FSP Network Planner enables your network designer
to model alien wavelengths directly in the tool and
then apply optical analysis to verify the validity of the
design. The target performance of a planning domain
can be customized by your designer to ensure that
any optical path, including alien wavelength services,
complies with the design target and is transported
error free.
In addition, we support alien wavelength transport
in our FSP Service Manager and our RAYcontrol TM
control plane implementation. By utilizing our virtual
transponder feature, your network architect can
assign optical parameters including wavelength
frequency, service bit rate, launch power and OSNR

specications to each alien wavelength. These

parameters serve our RAYcontrol TM control plane
when routing and provisioning the alien wavelength
service across your optical core network. Consistent
with transponder-based services, inventory data at
service termination points and interconnection points
along the path are visible in our FSP Service Manager
for each alien wavelength service provisioned.

Key Benefits
Efficient Planning, Control and Management
As alien wavelength transport becomes an increasingly
common practice for interconnecting IP / MPLS routers
across optical core networks, efcient planning, control
and management of transponderless wavelength services is essential. Our alien wavelength transport
solution fully integrated into our FSP 3000 ensures
youre able to operate this new type of service in an
identical way to transponder-based services from initial
planning through to provisioning and maintenance. Our
comprehensive solution offers:

Standards-compliant
Fully compliant with ITU-T G.698.2 for seamless
interconnection with different 3rd party vendor
technology

Flexible virtual transponder

Customizable optical performance metrics including wavelength frequency, service bit rate, launch
power and OSNR specications

FSP 3000
ADVA Optical Networkings scalable optical
transport solution is a modular WDM system
specically designed to maximize the bandwidth
and service exibility of access, metro and core
networks. The unique optical layer design supports
WDM-PON, CWDM and DWDM technology, including
100Gbit/s line speeds with colorless, directionless
and contentionless ROADMs. RAYcontrol, our
integrated, industry-leading multi-layer GMPLS
control plane, guarantees operational simplicity,
even in complex meshed-network topologies.
Thanks to OTN, Ethernet and low-latency
aggregation, the
FSP 3000 represents
a highly versatile and
cost-effective solution
for packet optical
transport.
