Open The Door To Room 305 SEPTEMBER 16, 2015
In Language Arts this week, the students will recognize cause and effect relationships while reading
the tall-tale, "Thunder Rose". Also, they will identify and write direct and indirect objects. The
subject and predicate quiz was yesterday. Mrs. Smith was greatly disappointed in the results. She
had a review lesson today in hopes of the students getting a better grasp on the objectives. She hopes
the students take the opportunity to study notes, workbook and text study for a re-take of the quiz on
Friday. Grades will be posted soon. Spelling lesson 4 is due tomorrow
In Math, the students took a portion of the beginning of the year test. This will not be included in
the student's grade; rather it is a tool for measuring growth this year. Mrs. Johnson has targeted
skills from the Terra Nova tests that are areas where improvement could be made. These skills are
estimation, computation, and computation in context.
Practice for Fridays Social Studies test is available on quia.com/pages/dslawik/5th. Workbook pages
are due Friday. The Geo Challenge 2 is due next week.
In Science, we had our first real lab activity. We planted beans facing four different directions in
Petri dishes and then taped the Petri dish standing up against the wall. We made a prediction about
how we thought the roots would grow. Unfortunately, my notoriously not-green thumb rubbed off on
the class, and very few of our seeds seem to be sprouting. However, on Friday we will pool our
observation from the seeds that did sprout to see whether the data supports the Science concept of
positive gravitropism, which leads us to predict that the roots will grow down regardless of how the
seed was planted.
