Poly(butylene terephthalate) is a brittle polymer which was toughened by blending with varying

amounts of poly(ethylene-co-butyl acrylate). The crystallinity of the sample decreased with

increase in EBA content as determined by DSC results. The decrease in crystallinity leads to
improved impact strength. The impact strength increased with increase in rubber content. A large
amount of EBA leads to increase in complex and shear viscosity and much decrease in modulus.
The optimized blend was selected on the basis of the combined set of good tensile strength,
modulus and toughness. The optimized blend was compatibilized by addition of gycidyl
methacrylate grafted EBA polymer. It was observed that 20% compatiblizer with respect to EBA
showed improved impact strength with marginal decrease in tensile strength. So, this amount of
compatiblizer was used in compatibilizing the aforementioned different blends of PBT/EBA. The
decrement in interparticle distance and increment in size of the dispersed phase were observed
with increase in rubber content. The compatibilized blend showed increase in impact strength
and elongation at break and flexural strength while decrease in tensile strength and modulus
compared to uncompatibilized ones. The reason lies in the reaction of epoxy group in
compatibilizer with hydroxyl or carboxyl group present in PBT occurring during processing.
Moreover, the addition of EBA with compatbilizer caused transformation of some -crystal of
PBT to -crystal as observed in XRD results.

Note: something to be done

1) dSC, SEM, parallel plate and tga of 10 phr Eba with diff compatibilizer
2) FTIr, XRD of uncompatibilized or 10 phr Eba with diff compatibilizer( does eba induces
some -crystal formation.
3) Capillary of uncompatibilized or 10 phr Eba with diff compatibilizer
4) Calculate the interparticle distance from sem
5) Determine size and interparticle from sem for uncompatibilized blendalso.
