For gravity retaining structures which are not considered free draining, this will

be taken at 1.1m (no extreme condition tidal lag required for Factor of Safety
approach);

For blockwork wall type of construction a value of 0.5m under all conditions
(normal and extreme) will be considered for blockwork construction, where the
wall is considered relatively free draining.

For the analysis of gravity structures, tidal lag shall be applied in the form of a net water
force in accordance with BS 6349.
3.3.6

Construction Surcharge

The design shall take into account surcharge loading during construction stages. This
shall be generally taken as 10kPa. The effect of a large crawler crane shall also be
considered.
3.3.7

Bollard Loading

Bollard load cases are taken as defined in Table 3.13. The proportion of bollard loading
under normal working conditions to the rated bollard capacity will be confirmed using
hand calculations methods as defined in BS 6349-4 and if considered necessary by
additional mathematical modelling.
TABLE 3.13 BOLLARD LOADING
Load Condition

Load

Bollard load, operating normal conditions

0.5 x rated bollard capacity

Bollard load, extreme conditions

1.0 x rated bollard capacity

In the addition to the above, the following requirements will be met:

Mooring lines are assumed to act through 90 degrees horizontally, and up to 60

degrees vertically. The level of the bollard pull varies with the type of bollard.
The level of the bollard pull is assumed to be 250 mm above quay level for
design of the quay.

In the case of a gravity structures, bollard loads will be applied vertically and
horizontally (perpendicular to the wall). The following assumptions will be made
with regards to the load spread of bollard loads:
o

The vertical component (if applied) will be reduced by load spread down
the capping block and subsequent block courses (assumed at 45
degrees).

Case A Horizontal Bollard Loads for Reinforced Capping Block

In the event that the intention is to provide a reinforced capping block,

sufficient longitudinal reinforcement will be provided to distribute the load
within the capping block. No horizontal bollard load will be applied to the
blocks below this reinforced capping block.
o

Case B Horizontal Bollard Loads for Mass Concrete Capping Block

In the event that the capping block is designed to be mass concrete (or is
not considered sufficiently reinforced) a separate analysis will be carried out
for both the capping block and the blocks underneath.
