Besides that, intern able to explore to all kind of engineering drawings for civil,
mechanical and electrical diagram. Furthermore, intern able to apply knowledge of
AutoCAD learning form University to drawing work.
2. Engineering technique
During internship period some engineering techniques have been learned. For
example, unfold techniques for different type ducting has been learned. The types
of ducting are curve duct, square to round adapter, and tee pipe. The engineering
techniques used to unfold them are pipe segmentation method, 2d drawing method
for square round adapter and by used of SOLIDWORK.
type of engineering components. In this process, intern got to know the normal
specification for each type of engineering material.
4. Finding information
Sometime the intern needs to help manager find information on certain product for
reference for manager to do their proposal.
Sometime, the intern has chance to inspect and observe the workers in company
install machine and fabricate mechanical components. For example, installation
works of conveyor system. Furthermore, the intern also able to inspect many
engineering product around the company.
Sometime, the intern has chance to explore to other softwares. For example, PLC
program which is a program to write and execute program for electrical component
in machine.
8. Design
Sometime, the intern has to design things. For example, design of curve roofing by
used of SOLIDWORK. Designing require artistic skills and some engineering
knowledge to make sure the design is safe and beautiful to look.
11
During internship program, the intern will be had more understand and clearer
image on palm oil mill with constantly drawing on things related to it and go on
site palm oil mill.
10. Cleaning
Sometime intern require also to cleaning factory area with worker at every
Saturday. This day is standard day for cleaning factory and also a standard
operating procedure for every factory.
12
Thresher drum is a main component found in thresher station which separate oil palm fruit
brunches by rocking slam in a rotating drum to make the process of threshing the fruit of the
bunches of fruit that goes from the auto feeder was slammed with a round drum which
normally have (23 rpm) and with the help of a stripper which is on drums. Fruit will be lifted
and slammed so the fruit falls off from bunches. Through the grating drum, brondolan fall
onto the conveyor under threshers while empty jajangan pushed out by referring to the
horizontal plate bunch empty inclined conveyor next to a conveyor leading to the empty
bunch hopper.
3.1.1 MEASUREMENT DIMENSION OF THREHSER DRUM
First week, the intern has given a task to measure of thresher drum. There are two thresher
drum put in the factory of YI DA Engineering. Since, they are similar therefore only one of
the thresher drum have been measured. The dimension of the thresher drum has been
measured and record in a piece of paper.
The measurement tool used in this activity is measuring tape, vanier caliper and outside
caliper. Measuring tape is used to measure the certain length of thresher drum and vanier
caliper is used to measure the thickness of bar found in thresher drum. For outside caliper, it
used to determine the diameter of the shaft with semi-precision
13
Later, the thresher drum is drawn in AutoCAD. The recorded dimension is used in drawing.
The front, side, and some detail is drawn according the sample given by supervisor. Since the
work is large, therefore it was divided into several parts among colleague. However, there are
some parts of dimension is modify according to the requirement which has given by
supervisor.

The figures above are the picture of butterfly valve and symbol of butterfly valve.
A butterfly valve is a valve which can be used for isolating or regulating flow. The
closing mechanism takes the form of a disk. Operation is similar to that of a ball valve,
which allows for quick shut off. Butterfly valves are generally favored because they
are lower in cost to other valve designs as well as being lighter in weight, meaning
less support is required. The disc is positioned in the center of the pipe, passing
through the disc is a rod connected to an actuator on the outside of the valve. Rotating
the actuator turns the disc either parallel or perpendicular to the flow. Unlike a ball
valve, the disc is always present within the flow, therefore a pressure drop is always
induced in the flow, regardless of valve position.
2. Ball Valve
The pictures above are picture of ball valve and its symbol. A ball valve is a form of
quarter-turn valve which uses a hollow, perforated and pivoting ball (called a
"floating ball") to control flow through it. It is open when the ball's hole is in line with
the flow and closed when it is pivoted 90-degrees by the valve handle. The handle lies
17
flat in alignment with the flow when open, and is perpendicular to it when closed,
making for easy visual confirmation of the valve's status
3. Gate Valve
A gate valve, also known as a sluice valve, is a valve that opens by lifting a round or
rectangular gate/wedge out of the path of the fluid. The distinct feature of a gate valve is
the sealing surfaces between the gate and seats are planar, so gate valves are often used
when a straight-line flow of fluid and minimum restriction is desired. The gate faces can
form a wedge shape or they can be parallel. Gate valves are primarily used to permit or
prevent the flow of liquids, but typical gate valves shouldn't be used for regulating flow,
unless they are specifically designed for that purpose. Because of their ability to cut
through liquids, gate valves are often used in the petroleum industry. For extremely thick
fluids, a specialty valve often known as a knife valve is used to cut through the liquid. On
opening the gate valve, the flow path is enlarged in a highly nonlinear manner with
respect to percent of opening. This means that flow rate does not change evenly with stem
travel. Also, a partially open gate disk tends to vibrate from the fluid flow. Most of the
flow change occurs near shutoff with a relatively high fluid velocity causing disk and seat
wear and eventual leakage if used to regulate flow. Typical gate valves are designed to be
fully opened or closed. When fully open, the typical gate valve has no obstruction in the
flow path, resulting in very low friction loss.
18
An I-beam, also known as H-beam, W-beam (for "wide flange"), Universal Beam (UB),
Rolled Steel Joist (RSJ), or double-T (especially in Polish, Bulgarian, Spanish, Italian and
German), is a beam with an I- or H-shaped cross-section. The horizontal elements of the
"I" are known as flanges, while the vertical element is termed the "web". I-beams are
usually made of structural steel and are used in construction and civil engineering.
19
The web resists shear forces, while the flanges resist most of the bending moment
experienced by the beam. Beam theory shows that the I-shaped section is a very efficient
form for carrying both bending and shear loads in the plane of the web. On the other hand,
the cross-section has a reduced capacity in the transverse direction, and is also inefficient
in carrying torsion, for which hollow structural sections are often preferred. The material
are mild steel and stainless steel.
2. BOLTS AND NUTS
For bolt and nut, there are two different systems which is metric system and inch system
for their dimensions. Metric system using SI unit however inch system using BG unit.
However, the standard used by YI DA Engineering is JIS 1008 Grade A and which is
hexagonal head bolt in both metric and inch system.
3. SPROCKET
20
A sprocket or sprocket-wheel is a profiled wheel with teeth, cogs, or even sprocket that
mesh with a chain, track or other perforated or indented material. The name 'sprocket'
applies generally to any wheel upon which radial projections engage a chain passing over
it. It is distinguished from a gear in that sprockets are never meshed together directly, and
differs from a pulley in that sprockets have teeth and pulleys are smooth.
For sprocket, there are some important dimensions have follow there are chain pitch,
pitch circle diameter, bore diameter and number of teeth.
3.4 WELDING
By inspection around the factory we observed that the factory main activity is welding. Arc
welding and oxy-acetylene welding is the most used typed found in factory.
21
22
10. Cut with a torch keeping the tip pointed towards the imaginary intersection of the two
pipe centerlines.
The important key for this theory is the relative height of line for position 1 to 9 by taking the
position of height for 1 as origin. With these relative height a curve can be drawn by
connected all these point. However, the curve is just an approximate curve for further
accuracy more position might be used to the relative height of them.
However, to trace the relative height the vertical lines from each position of the bottom circle
to the line of cut is drawn, but by doing this we just can get the relative height therefore
another horizontal line is drawn to intersect the straight line beside with respective position.
The point of intersection can be used to drawn the shape of curved after unfold. However
only half of curved have been plot another half have to plot using the same way.
Therefore, by using this method any orientation of pipe with different cut of line can be
unfolded. The 90 bend or elbow and segmented pipe tee can used this method to draw
although the cut of line is different. For 90 bend or elbow, the cut of line is just a inclined
line. However for segmented pipe tee the cut of line is a curved line.
23
The step of drawing of unfold pattern for square to round is shown as below:
First step is to find all true lengths. The only way to able to see a true length line is
perpendicular to its plane. Develop a true length bar. Using the dividers or trammel points,
transfer from the top views points A1, A2, A3, A4, A5, A6, B6 and B1.Draw a line from the
top of your True length bar (which must be the total height of the fitting) down to each
reference mark on the base of the true length bar
24
Take the dimension A to A from the top view and draw a straight line. Set the dividers to
dimension A to B and draw a small arch as a reference point. Once the dividers are set, place
one end on A and make a reference mark as in Fig.1.
Set the dividers on points 6,5 in the top view and transfer this dimension to the
drawing as in Fig.2
Set the dividers to the A5 length from true length bar and make a reference mark that
intersects with 6,5 reference mark
Reset the dividers to the distance of 5,4 from the top view and transfer this to the
drawing.
25
Continue what were doing in Fig.2 until all A6 through A1 lines transferred.
Determining line B1, B is half the distance from A to A and referenced this with an arch.
Transfer line B1 from the true length bar by setting the dividers to that distance and
transferring it by placing one end on point 1 and drawing an arch across the arch is labeled B.
The intersection of these two arch's becomes point B. Draw a line from point 1 down to point
B and draw another line from point A to point B 2 pieces required to make one fitting. One
last thing to do is to connect the points 1 through 6.

3,5.3 SOLIDWORK
However, the quickest way to unfold these things is usage of SOLIDWORK. The picture
below shows picture of unfold for these things:
1. Unfold of elbow:
The picture above is unfolds of one segment of elbow, unfold of elbow has curved
line.
2. Unfold of pipe-tee
The picture above is unfolds of pipe-tee where the pipe head to another pipe is
unfolded which has almost similar shape as elbow.

From this design task, the intern have learned about for a design project is not no sufficient to
just fulfill physical requirement but the requirement of customer also have to take as
consideration because their comment is the most important part to make a design project
successful.

4.0 RECOMMENDATION
4.1 RECOMMENDATION FOR THE COMPANY
After 10 weeks of industrial training, some of the problems exist in the company have been
observed. There are some of recommendations have been given as below:
1. Using 3D software such as SOLIDWORKS.
Since, the company used AutoCAD as their drawing software. Therefore, the
company is suggested to use 3D software such as SOLIDWORKS. The reason why
SOLIDWORKS is recommended because it is more convenient to use compare to
AutoCAD to draw 3D drawing. The SOLIDWORKS has difference drawing
characteristic with AutoCAD due to SOLIDWORKS is dimension driven which mean
the drawing can be change by input dimension. It is slight difference compare to
AutoCAD which need to input dimension first before drawing. In other word, the
drawing in SOLIDWORKS can be modify but AutoCAD cannot and have to redraw
if meet mistake. Furthermore, the SOLIDWORK can used to stimulate and analysis of
product but the AutoCAD cannot. So, by using SOLIDWORK will enhance the
efficiency of company.
After several inspections on factory, the equipment of cutting metal sheet is manual
cutting machine which mean the motion of cutting machine is control by hand. The
several disadvantages usage of this kind of equipment first vibration of cutting
machine will cause health problem of workers such as hand shake and reduce of
accuracy. Therefore, company may be could buy in some automation cutting machine
so that the worker can cut metal under safety environment and high accuracy.
while lift up heavy things. This happen because dont have proper working procedure
hence safety officer is required to do hazard management in factory to make sure all
the workers are work under safety environment.
4.2 RECOMMENDATION FOR FALCULTY
The recommendation for falculty of mechanical and manufacturing engineering (FKMP) is
supervisor from FKMP should visit the trainees twice during the industrial training.
Supervisor from faculty should visit the trainee once in the first two weeks of their training to
make sure they are properly having their industrial training and once in the last two weeks to
evaluate their performance.
4.3 RECOMMENDATION FOR TRAINING SCOPE
There are some recommendation is given for training scope as shown as below:
1. Given students chance to go on-site if the company has this kind of opportunity.
As a mechanical student, they required many practical and contact to real life machine
instead of merely obtain knowledge in book. Therefore, go on-site is the best choice
to learn new thing and related what they seen to theory obtain from book. For
example, when installation of machine in factory student can observe and learn how
the workers install them.
2. Given project based task.
Furthermore, the LI supervisor may be can gave the interns a project base work to do
so that the interns can learn more thing and faster to adapt to environment by
cooperate with profession in engineering field.
40
5.0 CONCLUSION
As a conclusion, through this internship training program which offered by University of Tun
Hussein Onn Malaysia the intern have chance to explore to engineering working environment
for enhance professional skill and interpersonal skill as a professional in Yi Da Engineering
Sdn Bhd. The intern also have chance to communicate and cooperate with profession from
engineering field. Furthermore, the intern is also gain working experience from YI Da
Engineering.
In this internship program, the interns have given different task which required creativity,
technical skill, interpersonal skill and communication skill. Therefore, in this period the
intern has to connect work experience with knowledge learn from IPT by applied theory and
academic knowledge on work. Besides that, the intern also forced to enhance soft skill and
communication skill because without all these skill the interns would not survive in future
engineering works. Furthermore, the intern can obtain some experience and knowledge for
benefit of chooses work after graduate.
At last, the intern also learned a lot in YI DA engineering and have chance to explore in palm
oil mill industry. However, there are still have a lot of things need to learn because the intern
just have two month duration to go through the intern life.
