Lobe Pump

Rotary Lobe Pumps

Rotary Lobe Principal
1. Atmospheric or other external
pressures transfer the fluid into the
partial vacuum created by the
diverging rotor lobes.
2. As the lobes continue to rotate,
liquid is trapped within the cavity
between the rotor lobes and
transported to the discharge side.
3. The action of the converging lobes
displaces fluid into the discharge port.

LOBE PUMP
ADVANTAGES/DISADVANTAGES
Advantages
Pass medium
solids.
No metal-to-metal
contact.
Superior CIP/SIP
capabilities.
Positive suction,
nonpulsating
discharge.

Disadvantages
Requires
timing gears.
Requires two
seals.
Reduced lift
with thin
liquids.

Circumferential Piston Pump

Operating Principle
The Circumferential Piston Pump is a
Rotary Positive Displacement principle
As the cavity increases on the suction
side, product is drawn into the pump
Fluid is transferred from inlet to outlet
positively through the cylinder by the
rotating pistons
Fluid is discharged on the pressure side
as the cavity contracts

Circumferential Piston Pump

Advantages:
Good solids handling
Self priming
Little to no pulsation
No compressive forces
Low slip
Efficient on low viscosity
Can handle abrasives
Long sealing path
Remanufacturing
Disadvantages:
Complex design
Cleaning
Non front-loading seals

Progressive Cavity Pump

Slurry Liquid
High Viscosity Liquid

Progressive Cavity Pumps

Progressive cavity pumps are positive displacement

pumps which can handle products that

are easy flowable to highly viscous/pasty

contain solids
are abrasive or corrosive
have low shear characteristics
require accurate metering with minimum pulsation

How progressive cavity pumps work?

The rotor

Rotating pumping element

Single external helix
Circular cross section
Eccentrically manufactured

The stator

Stationary pumping element

Double internal helix
Helices are 180 opposed
Thread pitch length is twice
as long as the thread pitch
length of the rotor

How progressive cavity pumps work?

When rotor and stator

are combined, cavities
are created
As the rotor revolves,
these cavities progress
in a spiral
motion
through the pump

Two complementary cavities are

formed, so as one cavity is
finishing it's cycle another is
beginning it's cycle

This results in an uninterrupted,

continuous flow

How to select a progressive cavity pump?

Calculate technical pump data
Which pump data need to be calculated?
1. Pump speed
2. Power absorbed
3. Starting power
4. Axial forces

How to select a progressive cavity pump?

Check assembly possibilities
A critical point which can easily lead to mistakes and has in any case to
be checked is the fitting possibility between pump and drive
