What is it?

Students in English-speaking countries,

after finishing secondary school and
starting university, often choose to take a
year off. This way they can learn new
things and, many times, help other people.
Just for the fact, almost 200 thousand
British take a Gap every year.
Who can take?

Almost everybody, especially in the

United Kingdom (UK) and the United
States of America (USA) where there are
well organized companies to help young
people organize their gap year. Of course
you need some money to do it.
Where can people go?

You can go almost anywhere. The most

popular destinations are:
• Australia
• Africa
• Canada
• USA
• ... (among others)
What can people do?

• Volunteering - many young people decide

to help the others in their year off. Gap
year companies offer a wide range of
choices: conservation, humanitarian work,
etc.
What can people do? ²

• Adventure – the other possibility is to have

a lot of fun. Adventure plans include
bodyboard in paradise beaches, do
bungee-jumping, climb the Andes, among
others.
Advantages

• Gain a year of world experience;

• Discover the world, meet other people;
• Connect with other cultures;
• Learn important things that will contribute
to our future;
• And most of all, have a lot of fun.
Disadvantages

• Your non-gap-year mates will graduate a

year before you;
• It can be too expensive;
• You could be almost a year away from
your family and friends;
• You will start your professional life at least
a year later.
