students.RabbisHillelandShammaioftendisagreedwitheachotheron
mattersofJewishlawandpractice.IntheTalmud,manyoftheir
disagreementsarerecorded.Often,RabbiHillelsopinionistheonethat
theTalmudinstructsustofollow,buteveryonceinawhileweare
instructedtofollowRabbiShammaisopinioninstead.
Whentheirstudentswerelookingforinstructionsonhowtolightthe
Chanukiah

Onthefirstday,alleightcandlesshouldbelit.Oneach
ofthenextsevennights,lightonelesscandlethanthenightbefore(7
candlesonthesecondnight,6candlesonthethirdnight,andsoon).
RabbiHillel:
Irespectfullydisagree.Onthefirstnight,onlyonecandle
shouldbelit.Oneachofthenextsevennights,anadditionalcandleshould
belit(2candlesonthesecondnight,3candlesonthethirdnight,andso
on).

Inordertodecidewhichofyouropinionstofollow,weneedto
understandalittlebitmoreaboutwhyeachofyouthinksitshouldbedone
inthewayyouhavedescribed.

BylightingthecandlesinthewayIhavedescribed,you
willberemindedofhowmanynightsofChanukahareyettocome.

willbeabletotellhowmanynightshavealreadypassed.Moreimportantly
though,increasingthelightseachnightwillremindyouthatwheneverwe
aredoingsomethingholy,weshouldmakesurewearealwaysincreasing
theholiness(thelight)andnotdecreasingorlesseningtheholiness.
