    LongbeforethecomingoftheSpaniards,therealreadyexistedanextensive
    region(consistingofthepresentprovincesofIlocosNorte,IlocosSur,Abra
    andLaUnion)whichwasrenownedforitsgoldmines.MerchantsfromJapan
    andChinawouldoftenvisittheareatotradegoldwithbeads,ceramicsand
    silk.Theinhabitantsoftheregion,believedtobeofMalayorigin,calledtheir
    placesamtoy,fromsaomitoy,whichliterallymeantourlanguage.
    In1571,whentheSpanishconquistadorshadestablishedtheSpanishCityof
    Manila,theybeganlookingfornewcentersofadministrationtoconquer.
    Legaspisgrandson,JuanDeSalcedo,volunteeredtoleadoneofthese
    expeditions.Togetherwith8armedboatsand45men,the22yearold
    voyagerheadedtowardsthenorth.
    OnJune13,1572,SalcedoandhismenlandedinViganandthenproceeded
    towardsLaoag,CurrimaoandBadoc.Astheysailedalongthecoast,they
    weresurprisedtoseenumerousshelteredcoves(looc)wherethelocals
    livedinharmony.Consequently,theynamedtheregionYlocos"andits
    peopleYlocanos.
    AstheChristianizationoftheregiongrew,sodidthelandscapeofthearea.
    Vasttracksoflandwereutilizedforchurchesandbelltowersinlinewith
    Spanishmissionofbajolascampanas.Inthetownplaza,itwasnot
    uncommontoseegarrisonsunderthechurchbells.Thecolonizationprocess
    wasslowlybeingcarriedout.
    TheSpanishcolonizationoftheregion,however,wasnevercompletely
    successful.OwingtotheabusivepracticesofmanyAugustinianfriars,a
    numberofIlocanosrevoltedagainsttheircolonizers.Noteworthyofthese
    weretheDingrasuprising(1589)andPedroAlmasanrevolt(SanNicolas,
    1660).In1762,DiegoSilangledaseriesofbattlesaimedatfreeingthe
    IlocanosfromtheSpanishyoke.Whenhediedfromanassassinsbullethis
    widowGabrielacontinuedthecause.Unfortunately,shetoowascapturedand
    hanged.In1807,thesugarcane(basi)brewersofPiddigroseupinarmsto
    protestthegovernmentsmonopolyofthewineindustry.
    In1898,thechurchexcommunicatedGregorioAglipayforrefusingtocutoff
    tieswiththerevolutionaryforcesofGen.EmilioAguinaldo.Unperturbed,he
    establishedtheIglesiaFilipinaIndependence.Aglipaysmovementandthe
    nationalistsentimentitespousedhelpedrestoretheselfrespectofmany
    Filipinos.
    Inanefforttogainmorepoliticalcontrolasaresultoftheincreasing
    populationoftheregion,aRoyalDecreewassignedonFebruary2,1818
    splittingIlocosintotwoprovincesIlocos:IlocosNorteandIlocosSur.Soon
    thereafter,theprovincesofLaUnionandAbralikewisebecameindependent.
