11-1 Graphing Linear Equations

BY: ME
Linear equation
• A LINEAR EQUATION is an equation whose
solutions fall on a line on the coordinate
plane. (straight line)
Graphing linear equations
• To graph a linear equation, choose 5 values to
plug in for “x” and solve. (choose easy values,
almost always use -2, -1, 0, 1, 2)
Graph the following equation and tell if
it is a linear equation.
y = 2x – 3
X 2x – 3 Y (x, y)
-2 2(-2) - 3 -7 ( -2, -7)
-1 2(-1) - 3 -5 ( -1, -5)
0 2(0) - 3 -3 ( 0, -3)
1 2(1) - 3 -1 ( 1, -1)
2 2(2) - 3 1 ( 2, 1)
Graph the following, and tell
whether it is a linear equation.
y = x²
X x² Y (x, y)
-2 -2² 4 ( -2, 4)
-1 -1² 1 ( -1, 1)
0 0² 0 ( 0, 0)
1 1² 1 ( 1, 1)
2 2² 4 ( 2, 2)
Graph the following, and tell
whether it is a linear equation.
y=
X 2x ÷ 3 Y (x, y)
-6 2(-6) ÷ 3 -4 ( -6, -4)
-3 2(-3) ÷ 3 -2 ( -3, -2)
0 2(0) ÷ 3 0 ( 0, 0)
3 2(3) ÷ 3 2 ( 3, 2)
6 2(6) ÷ 3 4 ( 6, 4)
Graph the following, and tell
whether it is a linear equation.
y=-3
X -3 Y (x, y)
-2 -3 -3 ( -2, -3)
-1 -3 -3 ( -1, -3)
0 -3 -3 ( 0, -3)
1 -3 -3 ( 1, -3)
2 -3 -3 ( 2, -3)
To solve on calculator.
Step 1: Hit the y= button in
top left corner.
Step 2: Type in equation in
y=mx +b form
Step 3: Hit the graph button
Step 4: Hit the 2nd key then
trace button (calc) then hit
enter button
Step 5: Enter a value for x, hit
enter button and y value will
appear
Step 6: repeat steps 4 and 5
to enter all x values
