MEL 314 Noise Engineering/ MCL 314 Acoustics and Noise Control (4 credits: 3-0-2)
Course Objectives

To understand the principles of acoustics covering generation, propagation and radiation of sound
To learn techniques for measurement and reduction of noise

Wave motion in strings, bars, beams and plates


Acoustic wave equation
Sound generation and radiation
Reflection and transmission of acoustic waves
Human response to noise and noise criteria
Sound measurement and instrumentation
Sound in enclosed spaces
Sound absorption
Acoustic enclosures and barriers
Sound propagation in ducts; mufflers
Vibration control

Evaluation Scheme:
Major: 40%, Two minors: 20%+20%, Assignments, Quizzes and Practical: 20%
Attendance Policy:
Attendance will be calculated with 1P for every lecture attended and 1P for every practical attended.
A minimum of 75% combined attendance in lectures and practical is required. If attendance of a
student is <75% but >60% then the grade of the student will be reduced by two grades. If the
attendance is <60% then the student will be awarded an F grade irrespective of his/her total marks in
the course.
