Test I

CH3003 CHEMICAL REACTION ENGINEERING

Duration: 1 hour
Date: 03/09/2015
Instructions: For example Answer all questions

Maximum Marks: [20]

1. Define Pseudo-steady state hypothesis (PSSH). The thermal decomposition of ethane to

ethylene, methane, butane and hydrogen is believed to proceed in the following sequence.
Initiation
1
C 2 H 6
2 CH 3

Propagation:
2
CH 3 C 2 H 6
CH 4 C 2 H 5

3
C 2 H 5
C2 H 4 H

4
H C 2 H 6
C2 H 5 H 2

Termination:
5
2 C 2 H 5
C 4 H 10

Apply PSSH to derive the rate law for the formation of ethylene.

2. State the rule of thumb and calculate the activation energy for the decomposition of
benzene diazonium chloride to give chlorobenzene and nitrogen using the information in
the table for this first order reaction by graphical method.

3. The reaction of triphenyl methyl chloride (trityl) (A) and methanol (B) was carried out in
a solution of benzene and pyridine at 25 C. Pyridine reacts with HCl that then
precipitates as pyridine hydrochloride thereby making the reaction irreversible.

The concentration-time data in table was obtained in a batch reactor.

The initial concentration of the methanol was 0.5 mol/dm3. Determine the reaction order
with respect to triphenyl methyl chloride.

4. Match the following
A. First order reaction
B. Rate constant
C. Biological reactions
D. Second order reaction
