WEEKEND MASS SCHEDULE

All weekend Masses in Church
Saturday: 5:30 pm
Sunday: 9:00 am and 11:15 am
1:30 pm (Spanish)

This Sunday a ernoon the parish ocially welcomes the friars. While this may be
the ocial welcome, I have already felt your sincere welcome. Thank you. A wise friar once
told me that a new friar-pastor should not talk about money during the first year. Good
advice that I planned to follow but a rule that I must break a er my first week! The first
weekend I was here one of the air condi oning units in the church failed. It needed to be
replaced at a cost of $4,191. There was only $1,000 in the capital improvement account.
Since we did not have enough money, I thought that we would just not use AC in the church
un l next spring. By Gods grace we would have the funds by then. This was not possible.
It turns out that AC is needed in this region un l October and that the remaining AC unit is on
its last legs. Delaying would put a strain on the system and possibly cause remaining unit to
fail as well. I consulted two members of the finance council and they agreed that we had to
purchase the new unit ASAP. We used money from an account dedicated for another
purpose. This must be repaid. So with humility I ask that in the next few weeks you make a
contribu on to the capital improvement fund--If you are able. You may place it in the
collec on basket in a marked envelope. God willing, I will not have to speak again about
money for a while. I know that many of you are contribu ng regularly to the parish and thank
youwe are grateful.
This weekend we commission over thirty catechists. What a blessing to have so
many men and women to pass on the faith! We could always use a few more catechists and
helpers. Please pray for them and support them by bringing your children on me to class.
Remember the first teachers of the Faith are parents.
Please pray for Pope Francis as he visits the United States and for the success of the
Synod on the family.
Pax et Bonum.

Fr. Bill

Who is the greatest?

The readings and their message
Wisdom 2:12, 17-20
Some ancient socie es believed that monarchs were the
descendants or at least a manifesta on of God. In those cases, the
tle of son of God would be a real name; however, this does not
appear to be the case in this passage; instead it alludes to a more
in mate, even familiar rela onship with Goda very unique
rela onship. The deeds of the one who is said to be the Son of
God upsets those who are perverse and whom this manifesta on
above all else, results in an accusa on of their own conduct.
James 3:16-4:3
One of the most notable characteris cs of this wisdom is the
contrast between the path of evil and good. The focus of this
reading goes from the vision of peace t at God oers to the reality
of conflict present in the majority of human environments. Such
conflict is an indica on that the people have not been capable of
walking in the paths of God.
Mark 9:30-37
Jesus is iden fied here with the Son of God who will appear in the
clouds announcing the end of one era and the beginning of
another. Before that occurs, he will be delivered to those who will
kill him, betrayed, and will suer. The disciples do not comprehend
this; yet it is logical because on the one hand, Jesus is iden fied
with the Messiah they are expec ng to arrive triumphantly. The
idea that someone who had a divine condi on took on the
condi on of a slave or a child who is completely dependent does
not seem to make sense to them; and Jesus goes even further: in a
society in which children are on the lowest social scale, he says
that the smallest are Gods favorite.

Homily reflec on
Children o en wish to be number one, the best. They
argue among each other about who is more important, who
grandma loves the most, who has the most things Some mes
we view them with lenience, thinking that they are just children
and as such act like children, without realizing that on many
occasions adults can some mes behave in the same manner.
Compe veness is a very characteris c trait of our
society, not just in sports, but also in our job and even among
friends. There are many mes when the media encourages us
through adver sing to be more or less equal or be er than our
neighbor, and have as many things as they do. On the other hand,
people who triumph, possess fame, money, and a high level of
educa on are considered to be successful. This is how the
disciples of Jesus carried about, arguing over who was more
important.
Today Jesus topples this no on, overturning what the
world considers to be of value. He responds to his friends that
precisely the greatest among them, the Son of God, would suer

and empty himself of everything. The kingdom of God belongs to

the smallest, the least among them.
This was surely not what they wanted to hear, they had
been so adamant about being the best, the first, but the message
is that whoever wants to be first, will be the servant of all. We
o en sing in Mass that Power is in serving, because God is love.
The result of a community free of compe on, a community or
family where people try to serve one another, will be a
community filled with peace, without violence, and with less
conflict.

For reflec on
In which moments of my life have I felt pressured to compete with

others for aenon, posions or privileges? What produces the

greatest conflicts and tensions within our community? Are we
capable of conceding and serving without expecng fame, privilege,
or control? How can we introduce the opportunity in our
community for members to reflect about our tensions and conflicts?
Is there someone in my family or community that needs my
aenon to help them resolve conflicts? What can I do for them?
