EXPLORATIVE PROJECT | Kandinsky

PROCEDURE:
1. IN CLASS: Review Kandinskys work and motivations for making
his work.
2. Listen to Arnold Schoenbers Herzgewchse. This is one of the
musical pieces Kandinsky listened to while making his work.
While listening to the music create a line drawing with a pencil.
Think of what kind of shapes (organic and geometric), the types
of line- thick, thin, curved, sharp, heavy, soft, etc.)
3. After you have completed your line drawing use a Sharpie
marker (thin or thick or a combination). Trace over your lines
with the Sharpie to give them definition. You will want to again
think about thickening some of your lines to add emphasis and
movement in your composition. At this point you may also want
to consider adding line patterns or textures within your shapesthis can add to the variety of your composition
4. Add color. You may use any number of mediums- watercolor,
acrylic, pastel, colored pencil. You will want to consider the
emotional impact of the colors you use. Think about how the
music makes you feel and the emotional symbolism you can use
with color (i.e. red= passion, anger, blue= calmness or
depression)
5. Finally stand back and really look at your creation. Does it need
anything else? Do you need to add more lines or shape, texture,
color?
