Executive Summary
The golden arches are viewed by billions of people every day. McDonalds achieves market saturation by
selling franchise operations throughout the world. Sustainability is a top priority for the company as it
seeks to build its brand and serve all of its stakeholders. Our company, Vulcan, wants to assist
McDonalds in their mission to continue energy efficiency. Vulcans PowerFry3 is an Energy Star
qualified fryer designed with patented technology that reduces energy costs within a commercial kitchen.
Installing the PowerFry3 adds to energy efficiency, and the choice to use energy efficient equipment
supports McDonalds goal of sustainability and corporate social responsibility. The goals include:

Earning an Energy Star label on McDonalds frying equipment

Building McDonalds brand by continuing corporate social responsibility
Reducing costs
Placing the Energy Star label on kitchen appliances will support McDonalds platform of being
environmentally aware. Many Fortune 500 companies display the Energy Star label showing their
commitment to sustainability. Consumers and employees are influenced by company decisions that
impact the environment. Making business decisions that support energy efficiency continues a positive
corporate social responsibility strategy. The PowerFry3 is 35% more efficient than standard models on the
market. Installing the PowerFry3 fryer can reduce costs by approximately:

$500 per month per fryer

$3,000 per month per single franchise with six fryers
$35,000 annually on utility bills per franchise
The installation of the PowerFry3 will provide McDonalds with cost savings in addition to efficiency and
demonstrate their promise to be corporately socially responsible. Vulcan wants to provide McDonald's
with the tools to support their goals and create value for stakeholders. We will be meeting with the
corporate executives on February 1, 2016 and will provide the necessary information and contracts to
make a decision.

Corporate Social Responsibility: Building Your Brand by Giving Back to the

Green Movement
Consumers care about what businesses are doing to impact the environment. Liz Maw, CEO of Net
Impact stated, Sustainability isnt just important for people and the planet, but also is vital for business
success (Fallon, 2015). A study conducted by Cone Communications showed that 90% of consumers
would choose not to do business with a company that had no social responsibility strategy (Weinger,
2014). Technology has improved communication and awareness about global issues such as sustainability,
and consumers care about the decisions that businesses make with their money (Fallon, 2015).
Corporate social responsibility also influences how employees feel about their job. If employees believe
that their work supports a good cause, they are more likely to be happy and productive at work (Weinger,
2014). Productive employees are vital to a businesss public image, which is a fundamental concept for
steadily increasing profits.
According to the Energy Information Administration, restaurants use more energy than any other
commercial buildings. Food preparation makes up approximately 24.4% of total energy use in restaurants,
as shown in Figure 1. The amount of energy consumed by food preparation is higher than the amount of
energy consumed by any other function within a restaurant (Sustainable Foodservice, 2013). Installing the
PowerFry3 will support McDonalds mission in conserving energy within their commercial kitchens.

The PowerFry3 Fryer has been awarded the Energy Star Label. The Energy Star label is approved by the
United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and is selective when deciding which products to
endorse. All certified appliances must:

Contribute significant energy savings nationwide.

Deliver the features and performance demanded by consumers
Enable purchasers to recover the extra money spent to buy energy efficient products, which are
often more expensive than regular products

Technical approaches Energy Star has taken to reduce energy consumption among commercial fryers
include:

Advanced heat exchanger designs

Advanced electrical heat transfer technologies
Thermostats with improved accuracy
Frypot insulation

Having earned the Energy Star label and designed with a patented three pass heat exchanger, the
PowerFry3 will contribute to McDonalds mission of energy efficiency. The installation will not address
all energy efficiency needs of McDonald's franchises, but the product will significantly cut energy
consumption, and therefore reduce Mcdonald's carbon footprint.

Reducing Costs
Installing the PowerFry3 can save a franchise almost $35,000 per year in utility bills, as shown in Figure

responsibility strategy, and will satisfy stakeholders. The product will reduce costs within franchise stores,
cut energy consumption rates, and reduce McDonald's carbon footprint. Vulcan is meeting with corporate
executives on February 1, 2016 before the annual EPA evaluation of all restaurants and their kitchen
