Chasing zero
Reflecting on the video to prevent medical error, it portrays disastrous effects
medical error can have on their recipients and how they can ruin the lives of the
healthcare providers who are at fault. This video tells both side of a victim and
healthcare providers who were at fault. Their stories tell us how medical error affected
their lives. The victims who came fourth sharing their heart breaking stories brought
attention to medical profession, awareness about harm that medical errors can cause.
Dennis Quaid and his wife twins kids was victim of medical error. His twins babies at
the time were given 1,000 times more the amount of heparin than they should that
cause an awareness to Dennis that the medical team need more medical safe practice.
Dennis campaign Chasing Zero that presented a goal. A goal to decrease the amount of
medical errors that occur, by such a significant amount, that the resulting number is
zero. Zero is not an easy objective, and many people may think it is impossible.
However, no matter how difficult it is, it is the responsibility of every healthcare worker to
do his or her part to reduce the general number of medical errors occurring as much as
possible. Many health care workers came together and brains storm ways to find
solutions to decrease medical error. A group of medical profession came up with
checklist to prevent error, ways to decrease medical infection and to promote healthy
patient. As a nursing student, I am glad that I will get exposed to the concept of medical
errors this early on in my training so I can actively define my role in preventing them.
The video made me aware that I am entering a profession where my actions will have

an effect and if an error is made there will be significant consequences. I will practice
chasing zero goals by taking certain measures to ensure that bad and perhaps
dangerous habits, which can lead to errors, do not develop. I will continue to practice
with care and awareness.
