FOOD:

Humanitys Global
Challenge

Chapter 1 Objective #3

Modern Transportation
* Transport food from one side of the country to the other
Ex. Seafood from our East Coast to the Midwest and
California
Alaskan King Crab delivered to us in New England
* Availability of seasonal foods all year round
* Import foods from other countries
Ex. Wines and cheeses from Europe
Produce, such as bananas, come from Columbia, Equador
and Nicaragua but distributed from Ohio

Includes: Trains, planes, trucks, barges (boats) and local

transportation

IMMIGRATION
* Immigrants bring with them their own
customs, cultures, food items, spices
and ways
of cooking
* Examples can be found throughout the entire U.S.
We are known as a Salad Bowl of cultures
* Foods vary throughout the U.S. due
to where certain immigrants settled:
ITALY pasta, pizza
IRELAND potatoes
BELGIUM French Fries (yes, French fries!)
SPAIN sofrito (sauce to flavor beans, rice, fish)

NATURAL DISASTERS
Catastrophic events that cause widespread
devastation
Includes: Volcanic eruptions, tsunamis,
flooding, fires, tornados, hurricanes,
earthquakes, wind storms, and disease

Limits the amount of food & clean water,

ability to transport food easily,
accessibility of food, safety of food

Haiti Earthquake
August 2010

Hurricane Katrina in U.S.

Earthquake in
Iran

Flooding in Pakistan

Fires in
Portugal

Oil spill in
China

WAR

Animals killed by poachers for their tusks, hides, & other valuable
parts

Unsafe drinking water

Animals killed to prevent people from farming/eating their livestock

Refugees displaced to neighboring lands = inadequate food & water

supply

Competition for land often leads to violence & war

Not enough national resources to begin with and/or destroyed

during wartime

Other countries imports (relief efforts) being seized by those in

power

$$$ is used on weapons instead of food

Landmines making farming difficult & often impossible

Fishermen carrying arms to protect themselves

Business & Politics

* Corporate logging
Burning of forests for land to farm displaces animals and people)
Burning of forests for wood/lumber
* Poachers kill animals for ivory, hides,
etc. and leave meat to rot
* Certain industries often tied to local drug lords
(Ex. Coffee, bananas)
* Big Business having monopoly (control) over major
American food market
* Fast food industrys affect on agriculture growing
larger animals faster messes w/their natural course of development
