Interesting Interest Groups

Introduction: Discuss what an interest group is. Keep in mind that

interest groups are not part of the government, but rather a group of
citizens that have joined together for a common purpose (such as
MADD, SWAT, NCAAP, etc.) to influence and/or monitor the
government.
Your Mission: Research and discuss an area in your school that needs
to be improved. It could be something like new lockers, cleanliness,
cafeteria food, bullying, technology use, and new athletic equipment.
Create: Get into groups of about 4-5 students and create your own
interest group about one of the topics discussed above or an area that
your group decides is important. Complete the following guidelines:
Choose a name for your group.
Create a poster that advertises what your interest group is
advocating for with a logo.
Explain on a piece of paper what kind of interest group you are
and three different ways that you will influence the school.
Create three powerpoint slides that use three different
propaganda techniques that promote your cause.
Choose a lobbyist from your group and help them draft a one
page speech that will be given to your SGA President and
Principal about why they need to change the school policy to
benefit your desired cause. The speech needs to explain why
your group was founded, what it brings awareness to, what

funds are needed, how the funds will be spent, and what the
desired outcome will be.
