easier and faster to solve
problems. It also helps you
learn new stuff everyday.

PRE COMPUTER AGE

Charles Babbage

o During the mid-1830s Babbage developed plans for theAnalytical

Engine , the forerunner of the moderndigital computer. In this device
he envisioned the capability of performing any arithmetical operation
on the basis of instructions from punched cards, a memory unit in
which to store numbers, sequential control, and most of the other
basic elements of the present-day computer. TheAnalytical Engine,
however, was never completed. Babbages design was forgotten until
his unpublished notebooks were discovered in 1937.

1930s

FIRST
GENERATION
o They were slow, huge,
expensive and unreliable
o The vacuum tube was used as
the internal computer
components
o Used a punch card to save data
o The tubes burn out frequently
o This is because it generated a
lot of heat and it produced
problems with temperature and
climate control.

SECOND
GENERATION
Transistors replaced
vacuum tubes
During 1856-1963
Generated less heat and

Less computational time
Were smaller

THIRD
GENERATION
o During the period of 19641971
o IC replaced transitors
o Faster and more reliable
o Reduce computational time
and had low maintenance
cost
o IBM 360 and IBM are
examples
o Smaller and cheaper

FOURTH
GENERATION
Networking between systems
was developed
Cheapest among all
generations
Microprocessor-based systems
Once filled a room now fit the
palm of your hand
Further refinement of
input/output was developed

FIFTH
GENERATION
o They use AI
o Recognize images and graphs
o Super large scale integrated
chips
o Intended to work with natural
language
o Power of human intelligence

MOST IMPORTANT
ADVANCEMENT
Now that computers have AI, everyone can use them and it is easy
to learn now. They can help you with many things like looking stuff
for you just by asking them by speaking
